as long as they don't get too wet, too hot, or too cold they should be fine in the back of a pickup truck. we have moved chickens with 3 to 4 hour drives and none of them got sick.

i would just quarantine all new birds together... as for travel, i used the back of the pickup truck and just made sure the birds had adequate ventilation. aka i didn't put a tarp over them, and they got lots of wind going down I-81 for 3+ hours. LOL

the beast (truck) is dead, so next time i'll be in a dodge stratus with trailer behind. i probably will use a tarp just to keep the worst of the wind off them, at least in the morning, but otherwise open is probably better than closed in. especially where there might be funes.

VA peeps, can someone PLEASE tell me where to get chickens in VA?! I've been scouring the internet and can't find local chickens. I'm in Northern VA and am looking for Australorps and Americaunas. This is my family's first attempt at chickens.
Thanks!!

Oh, I'd like them to be started pullets!

Hey, CountryMom5!

I have some hatchery Black Australorps that I rescued, that are starting their third year of lay. Last summer the eggs from 11 girls paid the way to feed my whole flock of 70+ birds. they are awesome layers, plus 5 of the 11 went broody and hatched successfully. I will be setting eggs from some of the best hens in the next week or two, and will have chicks at Gilmanor the first week of May. If you still don't have em by then, give me a holler. There is also a feed store nearby that has started pullets, i believe they are production reds.

I'm in Louisa, I know that's a long haul...

Theres a pretty good swap in Fishersville each month and then the big one in Glen Allen on 5/4. You can usually find a wide assortment of breeds and ages at a good swap. I'm even farther away in central VA but do come up to Culpepper on a fairly frequent basis and often bring birds with me to deliver. I have just sold the last of my 14 wk australorp pullets but do have 3 young roosters left and another batch due to hatch at the end of this month. Are you also wanting pure Auracanas or the " Easter Eggers" which lay blue, pink or green eggs? Know you're wanting started pullets but if you cant find any, I have a group of EEs available that are currently 3 and 1/2 weeks old which would make them due to start laying around the end of June. Have fun shopping and drop a line if I can help you or to just talk chicken.

finding chicks right now is kind of difficult, but most feed stores will start carrying them usually mid march or so... (tsc, southern states - don't know about local stores).

swaps usually start up about mid march also, plus the gilmanor swap on may 4th (in glen allen)...

i don't have the breeds you're looking for, but have a bunch of eggs in the incubator from my dorkings (and possible dorking crosses with Easter eggers and buff orpingtons).

the swedish flower hen chicks are for ME! 8)

Anyone near Bristol have an extra white silkie rooster? I'm trying to find one for a friend. Doesn't have to be show quality but would like it to have correct comb. thanks

what is this "swap" that you speak of?? We still need to get a coop set up so we're a few weeks off from needing hens but I want to get things rolling.

check with your local TSC to find out if/when they'll be having swaps...

the only ones i can speak for are roanoke on the 3rd saturdays of the month starting in april, and christiansburg on the 1st saturday of the month, also starting in april.
