Virginia

So it looks like I'll be culling my rooster this Saturday. He has become so people aggressive that I have no other choice. This will be my first cull of anything. But I know it has to be done.
I also have been feeling bad for my hens. He has warn their feathers off their backs. One of my hens has a bad cut on her back which I need to treat. Does anyone have advice on best treatment of open wounds?

Thanks so much!
April

I've put NuStock on cuts and that helps heal it right up and will help regrow the feathers.

Quote: city or county? roanoke countty, if you're zoned agricultural, you can pretty much do what you want. in the city, you have to play by the rules. (bleh)... 10 hens no roos. in the county it depends on acreage i believe. also if any HOA's are involved. (home owner's associations - another bleh)

This'll sound ridiculous. But I have no idea if we're city or county

We moved from Cali last May, then just recently to this new place in December. We have a good lot(over 30k SF). No HOAs, thankfully. And no neighbors touching the back/sides of our house. Maybe I'll call the utility company and they'll know.

Your tax bill should say whether you are in a city or the county. The municipalities near us have signage along the road stating what county or city you are entering, so a drive around your neighborhood might help. In VA most places are county governed, but a few populous areas are cities. You may also have success figuring it out on line using a map program like Mapquest or Google maps to determine where the boundaries lie. In King George County we have an on line program called GIS government information system, I know in Prince William County they had something similar. Those programs have info on city versus county lines.

Hello....I'm looking for 2 more laying hens to add to my current group of 5 EE's. I was wondering if anyone locally (Northern Virginia area) was in the market for selling some that might blend well with the EE's I have. I get a nice mix of egg colors between the 5 that I have, and would love to add some brown and white eggs. I'd love to get as blue an egg as possible, too. I am trying to avoid picking them up from a local TSC or Southern States because I have to go with 6, and right now I'd rather just go with 2.

Thanks for any info you might have!

well i've got 2 sweet buff orp girls that I don't want to get rid of, but are kind of out of place here... i'm still debating selling them off. both are laying well and super sweet...

or if you'd rather, i have a TON of chicks hatching. any possible combination of dorking/orp/ee/wyandotte mises (dork, dotte, ee roos). i do have some of the dorking/ee crosses spoken for already. 3 are about 2 weeks old. i have 6 buff orp/dorking cross chicks same age, then some pure dorking also.

hatching due tomorrow i've got pure dorking, and dorking/dotte-orp-ee's

my dorking/ee crosses should lay a much bluer egg than my current ee hens, since dorks lay a nearly white egg (olive/green comes from the brown egg gene)

Hmm....firstly, I have to make sure I don't end up with another rooster. I was able to find a new home for my first rooster, but don't want to have to deal with that again! With the 5 girls I have almost a year old, I was thinking it might be easier to integrate chicks rather than older birds. What are your thoughts on that?

Roanoke is a long drive for a couple of chicks. I'll need to figure out what I'm looking for. My focus has been on the 5 EE's I have for the last year, it's time to start branching out and seeing what might do well with my flock with what I have to offer. My only thing is looking for nicely colored eggs, and no roos!

A much bluer egg is enticing, though....and the bluer the egg, the more worthwhile the drive is. Yes, that's how much I want a blue egg!

I know my WL/EE mix girl lays a very pretty large light blue egg. Her mom (EE) lays a smaller closer to blue/green egg and her daughter lays an even smaller even darker green egg (silky mix). Mixing in the white layer helped with the size and color.

I took my youngest daughter with me to Southern States on Williamsburg Road this evening. Our goal was only to "look" at the chicks. I decided I would purchase a brooder lamp and bulb and a chick waterer. My daughter and I were enjoying holding and sexing the chicks. Before long I had talked myself into purchasing chicks and feed. The man said they have a deal going on.... you buy the 50# bag of chick feed and they give you 6 chicks for free. I now own 2 Ameraucanas, 2 Black Australorps, and 2 Speckled Sussex....all are pullets. They'll brood out in the garage until their all feathered out and can grow up in the chicken tractor and there until they're old enough to join the big girls in the coop. Chicken math is crazy!!
