Right down the road from you in Louisa Co. I'll have chicks in the spring, Basque Hens, BCMs, BAs , and egg mutts. I've got Basque pullets, Black Australorp pullets, and mutt pullets nearing point of lay now. Have to downsize for the winter.

Should the city of Virginia Beach consider amending the City Code to allow citizens living in certain residential zones to own and keep hens (no roosters) in their backyards?

So question... I'm just starting out - getting some chickens at the end of the month. Today a friend mentioned I should let her borrow some in the spring to till up her garden. At that point I'll only have 6, so I wouldn't want to "loan" any. But in the future if I had some to spare - are there disease/health problems that could result from them being on someone else's soil for awhile? She doesn't have any animals.

CONGRATS! On the soon to be new chicks. As long as your friend hasn't had any chickens there, then there isn't much chance that they could catch anything.. However, how does she plan to keep them? Will she provide safe housing? I wouldn't think that they could be free ranged so the garden area will need secure (birds in/predators out) fencing. Have yall discussed what happens if something happens to them while at her place?
There is a company that 'rents' chickens and secure tractors to folks looking to 'try out' the chicken keeping thing. Maybe yall could come up with a nice secure tractor to be used - or even just have her contact those folks if she's in their range...
