Virginia has some of the most stringent policies on importing poultry/chicks/eggs out there. breeders have to be NPIP and AI certified and have filled out the paperwork for shipping into VA. We should start a list of people willing to go through all that to ship here...anyone have any idea how do do a list like that and have it be permanent (pin it or something?)

You know this is something that perhaps the State Vet office could publish since they retain the information. It should be a public record anyway. I will send an e-mail to my State contact to see if it would be possible for them to maintain this list on a website.

So glad we only woke up to a dusting of snow today. Could have been so much worse.

I'm chomping at the bit to get chicks haha. Kinda want to get some of the black ones tsc has in before they're gone..but we don't have a heat lamp. sothern states will have their starter kits in next week which include a lot. Th en well get chicks

Well - we have a inch of ice and limbs are starting to fall off trees- still got power however - just don't know how long -

Just wanted to let everyone know that I did followup on my offer to contact the State Vet representative on a recommendation to get approved exporters of poultry to Virginia listed on an online webpage. Here is the e-mail that I sent:

Hi Kym!

I have been doing some advocating for NPIP on line in both Poultry groups on Facebook and on the Backyard Chickens web site. This includes promoting folks in State to get NPIP for their flocks and to attend the tester certification class. I have also been encouraging vendors from out of State to comply with Virginia's requirements which really are not onerous, some paperwork and process, but not really difficult.

One of the questions that comes up frequently is that it is really hard to know who is authorized to export poultry, both live birds and hatching eggs, to Virginia. Since those who would like to sell poultry to Virginia residents have to obtain approval from your office (I believe this is correct) by completion of the VA form and have their NPIP status confirmed by their State officials, it seems to me that these approvals would indeed be a public record. As such would it be possible to have this listing of approved poultry exporters on a State web page? This would greatly facilitate the goals of the NPIP program and provide a great service to poultry owners/small farmers in the State. One could readily identify whether the vendor was approved or not and thus avoid inadvertently importing stock from unapproved or other non-NPIP vendors. I also understand that it would require some resources to maintain updated listings.

I would appreciate some feedback on this recommendation. I will also be making this communication available to other poultry owners on line. So you may get some additional e-mails.

And it would be a great way to encourage participation because the webpage would be free advertizing for the breeders. Once you go NPIP you have to only buy chicks from NPIP people and those of us who want to live by the rules would have our choices made easier.

I'm in Giles County, Virginia, in a 2000 people town by the New River called Narrows! Hello to all of you and I'd love to know of a vet that does duck sexing, etc. within a 2hr radius of me! Any ideas??
