Curious of people thoughts. I am in the City of Richmond and we are only allowed to have 4 hens max. I wanted to start with chicks. What are my options since there is the state law requiring you to purchase six chicks. Can you purchase 6 and only take 4? Do i have any options here or will I just have to buy older hens?

I bought from a farm store and had to take six. The other farm stores in the area has a 6 chick minimum, too.

If you purchase privately from an individual, you can usually purchase less.

Well, I took advantage of the day. Cleaned out two coops and dumped the cleanings into the garden where my bachelors began to tear through it. I am betting that the garden will be super productive again this year. Did the same last year while letting the entire egg layer flock have access to the garden.

This resulted in cabbages that were 14-16 inches in diameter, cleaned and weighing 9.5-10 pounds each! The four hills of butternut squash produced 2.5 bushels of butternut squash. Not to mention loads of greens, peppers and tomatoes.

Years ago I had a neighbor who had chickens and put the litter into their garden. Our gardens backed up to each other with a fence between the two. The difference in the two gardens was startling and very embarrassing for me! Planted at the same time, our gardens looked months apart. Everything they had was taller, greener, and yielded far more than what we were getting.

Second to eggs, chicken poo for the garden is the reason I wanted to get chickens in the first place!

If you buy them at 8 weeks+ of age, it legal to buy any number you want.

When I let my egg layers loose when we have the vegetables gardens in, it results in loss of vegetables. They eat as many as they can and ruin many more by pecking them.
