Hi everyone. I'm in Augusta County. I've been wanting to start a flock of chickens for a long time now but we won't be moved and ready to get started until late this summer. Does anyone know if it's an okay idea to get chicks in the fall here in the Shenandoah Valley, or will I be better off to wait until next spring? (I'm hoping I don't have to wait that long!!) Also, I'm pretty sure I'd like to start with Orpingtons and would like a variety of colors, not just Buff. Does anyone know of a local source for Orpingtons or is mail-order my best option?

Hello I am from King William also.
I have five hens and two roosters, they are cross breeds but the hen are good layers. I would like to get rid of my roosters, they are alwys ganging up on the hens and I feel sorry for those girls.
If you would like to email me and see about getting one or two roosters please do.
PS I get my feed form Southern States on RT 360 in Mangohick.

coalroadcabin, I am in central Va. The chicks need a good 12 weeks to grow and feather out so they can survive the temps as we move toward winter. Get them late August and you should be fine. Maybe even as late as September. I raised meat chickens last fall and they did really well.

You can get them any time but you will be required to provide a draft free heat source of heat for them. If they get chilled they can get sick very quickly and die.

Buff Orpingtons are beautiful, one of my favorites! If you just want a laying flock several hatcheries offer white. The other colors come from breeders or breeders with a small hatchery on the side.

You'll find a few here with different colors. I have some blues and blacks but they are not laying yet and some are just baby chicks. I have a batch of black orp eggs coming this week! I hope to hatch me a wonderful black roo!

I'm in Bealeton/Fauquier County. Nice to know there are so many people near by. We have not purchased any chickens, YET. I'm in the research phase. I plan on getting my chicks the first part of April or so. I'm hoping to get a total of 15 6 Red Sex, 6 Black Sex, and the other 3 I'm not sure about yet. I promised the kids (2 girls, 6 and 9), that if they feed them and gather the eggs, that whatever they sell they can keep 1/2 the money. The other 1/2 will go to the hens.

Oh, and I just got off the phone with the Culpeper Lowes, and they have 4 of that $199 play house that Lone Cowboy has been posting pics about. It doesn't show it on the website though.

Hi, we are finishing up our log home on our farm in Orange county. Living in Fredericksburg till then. Am getting in rhode island red and black barred rocks, pulletts, and a bunch of guineas. Also 4 different kind of turkeys next month. And will have extra to sell if anyone is interested!!
