All right, you Virginian guys, who's getting the 4H pig? You work with my husband: Charles.

Ooo, didn't think that would be a thread killer!

I hope everyone got a chance to enjoy the NICE weather we had this weekend. Despite recovering from a sinus thing, I helped build a small coop for a breeding pen. I'm trying to plan the next mini coop to use up some of our scraps.

Caught a Barred Rock hen pecking an egg right as I was serving breakfast. She got moved to a pen with no egg layers. The Silkie roosters have been courting (and mating) her in earnest. It's very amusing.

Hello all! Not sure if when I started I introduced myself on the VA thread. I'm in good ol' Floyd County Va, a dot on the map, a one stop light town that I wouldn't trade for the world. I got my first "taste"

of life with chickens yesterday when we acquired 4 roo's (maybe 3 roos and a hen too young to tell on one) from a very nice lady. We are also expecting our first batch of female chicks to arrive the end of March! We currently have buff brahma's and when the chicks arrive they are all lights. I may end up with speckled chickies somewhere down the line! Hope all my fellow chicken lovers are doing well!

Really happy we are finally NPIP certified now. Also we will be taking the course to become a tester the middle of March so if anyone needs birds tested you can get in touch with us. We do have a fee but it depends on how many birds you have and how far you are from us.

Hello All,

I'm new to these forums. I also live in VA...Franklin/Carrsville area. I've had chickens for about 4 years now, and also have two pregnant pygmy goats, three dogs, a bunny and two cats! I just hatched out 11 baby cochins on Saturday in the incubator my hubby got me for Christmas - best present ever! It is so much more rewarding when you hatch out your own!

We have some barred rock, buff orpintons, RIR, and some wyandottes we will be incubating next. I hope to meet some others that are around the area and learn about swaps, etc.

Talk soon!

Susan

Welcome Susan - I live on the other side of Franklin ~ Courtland...... building a pasture now for a few lil Pyg Goats we looked at over in Ivor last week !

Welcome to BYC! I really like seeing "neighbors" that are less than a couple of hours away.

In a month if all goes well, we will have a couple dozen Ameracuana chicks hatched. I've saved all the blue eggs laid these last couple of weeks. In addition, the Ameracuana rooster "Fried" is over my grumpy hens: Hamilton and Spot. They should make interesting Olive Eggers. Throw in a few Barnyard Mix eggs I thought were neat looking and there will be a real Mutt Assortment!

Which reminds me: if anyone would like test eggs (cheap fertile eggs to test a new incubator or broody hen) feel free to PM me. Contact me a week or so early and I'll start putting aside some eggs for you. No order too small!

I might take you up on this I have a friend who has just gotten out of the hospital ( he fell through a roof) and he is trying to get a few more chickens Me and a coupla others have been taking care of his turkey and peafowl and chickens and dogs since he has not been able to I just put 3 eggs from his small flock in the bator yesterday . I am real close to bowers hill

Roofs (rooves?) are dangerous! My husband called his parents on Sunday, then walked up to me and said, "I'm going to my parents' house tomorrow to keep my father off the roof!" A man in his late 70s with health problems has NO business up on a roof! Hubby finished the repair in less than an hour and his mother "paid" him with lunch and a new polo-style shirt.

Back to the eggs: what current breeds does your friend have?

I have three pens of hens that are currently laying.

Pen April: Ameracuana rooster over two sisters that are half Dominique and half Ameracuana (probably different mothers, so half-sisters). The hens lay slightly green-tinged eggs, but they are looking more blue as the season progresses. Babies would most likely lay a blue egg with only a green tint.

Tractor Pen: Ameracuana rooster over two hatchmates hens. The hens are probably not half-sisters. Would make olive-eggers IF the eggs are fertile. The mothers of these hens are most likely White Rock. One is the daughter of the Dominique. The other looks like she got the RSL father.

Pen June: MPC all female assortment included: Barred Rock, Partridge Rock, Speckled Sussex, RIR, Black Astralorps or Black Jersey Giants (hard to tell) and lighter red that is either Red Sex Link or New Hampshire. Roosters are hatchmates, but doubtful they are half-brothers. Red looks like he has the RSL father and a White Rock mother. Blackie is definitely Black Hawk's son (Dominique). We think Blackie's mother was RSL because he has a lot of red leakage on his pretty black and white. All these 19 hens and 2 roosters run together. It's been a long time since I've seen a non-fertile egg from this pen!
