Aphrophet: sent you an email!

I had an interesting day yesterday. Hubby made us breakfast while I did my chicken chores. Oldest daughter and I then hit the road for an almost three hour ride to Cumberland, VA. It was a beautiful day for a drive! Stopped at Waffle House and got more sugar (pecan waffle!) because DH had fed us bacon and eggs. AT&T doesn't have a tower and no one has pay phones any more, so a nice man loaned me his Verizon phone.

Heather Bishop is a lovely lady. I would have enjoyed talking to her much longer, but she had a day off to enjoy and I had a DD holding a box of chicks, yelling "Mom, we need to get these babies home NOW!" She was soooo concerned and hasn't even peeked at them today. I wanted to hear more of Heather's emu story but it'll have to wait.

We got home with the eggs and chicks. I had won two different auctions from bishopschickens AND bought a few eggs. Those 21 eggs went into my incubator last evening with 29 of my birds' eggs. No, I'm not totally insane. I doubt all of the three week old eggs will hatch and I couldn't bear to throw them out. I'm sure many eggs will leave the incubator on offical candling day. Hopefully all the purchased eggs will hatch! Good incubator vibes and thoughts graciously accepted!

One chick was a Mister Pasty Butt. After I had their brooder set up and warming, we went to the bathroom for a cleaning. I couldn't get the water temp just right, so he didn't get put in the water. I rinsed my fingers over and over until I finally got to a lump that wouldn't move. Of course it was the umbilical stump scab! I quickly dabbed the spot with clean toilet paper and only got the slightest pink mark. He'll survive. I put him back with the others. Despite being right under the light, he shivered for way too long. I think that was for my benefit. He appears fine this morning.

I'm off to take another nap. This sinus thing is awful (I did NOT breathe nor cough on Heather, so she will be fine!) and I'll probably end up seeing the doctor tomorrow. Sweet dreams!

Glad you got everything home safely. One of the chicks we have ha to clean it's but once or twice before. Sorry I wasn't able to meet you Saturday but glad everything worked out with you meeting Heather. Hope you feel better and hope you have a great hatch on the eggs!

Gold Griffin , hope you enjoy those chicks. We have 4, 4 week old BLRW from Bishop's in our brooder now. They are little wild ones at this age! We also hatched 4 Lavender Orps from his Dad. They are doing great so far. We also hatched 4 of our EE and I am pretty sure they are all roosters. Of course!

We are getting ready to put a contract on a place near Lawrenceville if everything works out ok in the next few days. So who's near there that would have extra chicks or adults they'd want to sell in about 2 months? We are fans of BSL, BA, EE, silkies (bbs), andalusians (bbs) and hubby really wants a dominique or 3.
Not sure if I'll be bringing my girls with me, we'll see if TX can test for all of VA's requirements.

The chicks are in an opaque storage tote. All they are doing now is eating and sleeping. I peek at them often and haven't seen much playing. I will change their accomodations and see if they perk up. I think the translucent containers allow them to see us coming and not freak so much about the "big people are looking at us!"

KDbeads, you might check into the regulations. If you are bringing your own pets (not selling them), you might not have to do all the tests a merchant would. Yes, testing will help you to know everybody is healthy. How many birds do you currently own? I can't imagine having to sell all my birds to move. That would be harder than culling a rooster I hatched and raised.

All poultry coming into VA has to have 3 tests, salmonella, mg and something else and must be negative no more than 30 days prior to the import date. Which is a royal pain since here in TX they do things slowly

Seriously, some of the strictest import laws I've ever heard of.
I've already pared down my flock from 30 some birds to 6 and I may be dropping that down to the 3 favorites. I hate it really, it's killing me. I parted with all the silkies 4 months ago thinking we'd be fine for a home loan and up there within a few weeks but they changed the lending rules at the same time. Then I parted with all the layers when we started having predator problems around Thanksgiving. I kept 3 layers and our 3 favorites.

Ok, ya learn something new every day!

I do hope you can find a tester soon. I think I can assure you that once you get here, you'll find just about every breed you could want. I'm on the state thread for North Carolina since I live very close to the border. Yes, you've got the whole stateline thing again, but it seems that most people are either NPIP or about to get certified. Aren't hatching eggs from an NPIP flock considered fine?

As far as I know NPIP eggs and chicks under 6 weeks are fine, no testing required. So I'll be running across the border as well if I find some chicks/eggs after we get mostly settled

The TX state ag department will do all the tests for free, but it's normally a 6 week wait. Hoping import/export paperwork speeds them up.

No back to the massive list of stuff that suddenly appeared out of thin air for me to get taken care of...

Oh and for Brunswick county, I'm reading the official county codes/ordinances... nothing relating to poultry unless it's an 'intensive facility' Lets hope that's far more than the 30 some odd birds we normally keep
