Hey guy Stuarts Draft here! I actually had not heard of Polyface Farm. Watched a video on youtube, it was interesting. I had free range chickens inside of a half acre fenced area, it worked well except them wanting to crap on my back deck on the house and dig holes to dust bath in. Now I raise up chickens for my brother in law and let him give me a few eggs, also use welsummer bantam eggs to eat. So glad see you all trying to get into chickens and other poultry, it is a load of fun. My wife has been with poultry all her life, we also show birds in compatition such as the two poultry shows in the Rockingham fair grounds, one in the spring (Second Saturday of May) and the fair in the fall. We also know and have expeirenced problems with predators, weather and other conditions that effect animals, and animals getting sick. So if you all need any help with home remedies you all can contact me on here or get me by email from my profile. Also if you all are not familiar, there is a poultry swap over at Expoland in Fishersville off of I64 and Tinkling Springs road. It is every third saturday of the month, the first swap of the year will be March 19 from 7-12. Side information on any swap you go to, cold weather usually makes the swap a bit slow to start, but on good days usually the good poultry start geting bought in the first 2 hours. Also sometimes you will find other animals such as puppies, pigeons, pigs, or goats.

Thanx for all the great info. And that so cool you're into showing.
We'll probably see y'all at a poultry show one of these days.
We're currently in the process of planning where to put our coop.
We have about 3 acres with another acre of woods.
I would like to free range during the day since we do have a lot of trees the chickens can hide in.
But we do have the birds of prey that really like to watch our property (we have small dogs).
I've also seen an owl and fox hanging around (they must have a sense that there's baby chicks around).
Anyway, my chicks are only a week old (thereabouts), so I've got a bit of time before they go outside.
I won't be buying any more chickens (this year), but I will be visiting the swaps in the area.
There's one in Charlottesville coming up this weekend that I plan on checking out.

Well, here is one for those who like free range chickens woods are not a great idea, usually a tree or two good for shade but u probly want them in grass area with a coop. They love to scratch the grass for bugs. Now I could be wrong, but I do beleive Shamo roosters are agressive and will stand up to chicken hawks. They stand very tall and from what I have been told they will protect hens and will attack to protect, not something I would want my kid to be alone with anyhow.

My chickens free-range all day every day, and our property is mostly wooded. The only clear spots are where the house is and the drain field. They love scratching through the leaves and under and around downed trees and logs, and finding all the bugs, worms and other critters to eat. We have hawks fly over all the time and, knock on wood, haven't lost a chicken to a hawk in the two years we've been here. The woods give them cover, and when a rooster sounds the warning, they all hide.

True, I here more stories of people saying its easier for animals like foxes and coons to get them in the woods.

The woods behind my house connect to the national forest and i have seen coons, possoms and had a fox snatch a chicken and drag it under the fence. I know it was a fox cause of how it killed it and drug it off also heard it several nights.

I have Pit Bulls and a Dachshund that stay outside most of the day, so predators are hesitant to venture too near. We just recently saw a fox here after dark, so I sent my female Pit out, which quickly remedied the situation.
