They're great dogs. My female (spayed, of course) is my best patrol dog. If she hears any type of noise outside at night, she'll hit the front door barking and head straight around back to the coops. She's chased any number of would-be predators away from here, but mingles with the chickens, ducks and guineas and acts like they're not even here during the day when they're out. The male stays tied during the day (sleeps in my son's queen bed at night - spoiled rotten!), and alerts us to anything that might be around. My guineas were in the woods on our property today and my neighbor's dogs were barking at them. The male was ticked, and let them know in no uncertain terms that those were *his* guineas!

I live in Stuarts Draft, VA. Just getting started. I have three chickens (white leghorns) coming this week so i am scrambling to get my coop put together. Looking forward to learning a lot here.

Welcome to all our new Virginian BYCers!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask here.

If you live near a border or visit another state often, you might consider joining another state forum. I'm very close to NC and that forum is chatty! I figured if I was willing to drive the distance to buy a bird (or whatever) I should join their thread to become aware of their swaps, meets, and shows.

After that monsoon last night, my chicken pens are muddy! I started to do the bed check at regular time, but decided they were either already in bed or drowned! That rain was coming down solid. After I put the sick child to bed (she ran as high as 104!), I did my bird rounds. All were tucked in their houses and gave me the stink eye when I spot-lighted them.

By the way, it's Spring and the roosters are feeling their.... oats. Red (almost two years old) got into the pen with Fried (almost one year old). Youth won over age and wisdom. I didn't recognize Red when I first saw him. Apparently both boys spent all afternoon fighting in the rain. They both looked like drowned rats and I could really see that Fried out weighs Red. Red's normally cream body feathers looked like mud. He's a Red Sex Link so he's cream with red markings. One wattle got torn.

Chicken drama is only marginally better than teenager drama!

Hey Mom which NC board are you on ? I kina stink at candling but I found veining in most of the eggs you brought me thanks yea mixing roosters they heal quick sometimes it is harder for us to watch then it actually is for them and the pecking order is figgered out LOL

I think Red thought he'd show the young whippersnapper a thing or two and got his butt handed to him!

Good to hear the eggs are getting veins! Red and Blackie did something right.

The thread I think just says North Carolina. I'll forward you my next update. Looking up and forwarding links on this phone is not an easy task. Tennessee has three threads: Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, and East Tennessee. It is a rather wide state, lol.
