sorry to hear about the attack. and yes, Dr Stewart is great. i've taken my blue & gold macaw to him before. This may have been posted a while back but if anyone in the Roanoke area is in need of a vet for chickens Dr. Paul Stewart 540-989-4464 does chickens, he is a exotic and avian vet!!
I had a neighbors dog attack my girls last night. He killed 3, 1 survived and the other I took to Dr. Stewart late last night because she was tore up and in shock. I didn't think she was as bad off as she was and ended up having to put her to sleep. It was a horrible mess and I thank my lucky stars I have a wonderful husband who cleaned up. Dr. Stewart was so good with me and my girl. At least one good thing that came out of it was I donated her body to VA Tech vet school, it didn't cost anything for me and hopefully will help vet students learn about chickens and birds bodies!
RIP - Topper, Millie, Rascal and Haley we loved you like children and you will be sorely missed. The one surviving girl spent the night in the house last night, she was so excited to go out this afternoon but was terrified when I took her to put in the coop and run, she kept trying to find a way out and clucked for a long time it was horrible!! I checked on her a little while ago and she is sleeping a nesting box. I hope she will be ok and I hope to get a few more girls so she isn't lonely!
Thanks everyone! Dr. Stewart sent a sympathy card and we got it today it was so nice! My sole survivor laid an egg last night (found it this morning) and laid an egg today...I really thought she wouldn't lay for a while. She seems to be doing much better today, still sleeping in the nesting box tonight but I have been spoiling her with treats and lots of attention. I knew there was a chicken swap the 3rd Sat. each month at TSC in Roanoke, we went this past weekend just to look. I am glad there is one in Christiansburg, I do want to get a few more (but not 6 that's required at a store). I would like to find and EE, and the other breeds I like are Cockoo Maran, Red Sex Link, Barred Rock, buff, dominique, Jersey Giant, will just about any female chicken will do but I have to have an EE I love their muff and my last one was so sweet!
To ki4got I have a good friend with a standard "party" poodle, he is black and white, he loves to smile!!! I lwill ook for you at TSC.
Anyone around Roanoke with know of anyone with the breeds above or pullets I am interested. I may only add 2-3 for right now. I love raising from chicks but hate to wait for 5-6 months for eggs but they are so much better when you hand raise them since they are going to be pets. I also wonder how my 1 will do with young chickens, she tended to be at the top of the pecking order!
