Virtually free water dispenser HELP! (& almost done with my pen/coop)

Ok so Iv got my list. Iv tried getting some for free but id rather just pay and have it done!

Here's some links
so this is the tray I think I'll use, it's more expensive than the clear one but deeper I think and more sturdy

Here's my bucket of choice I'm thinking this is plenty for food. Might screw the bucket to the tray with some washer's a nut and bold and call it good.

And some sillicone I was hoping if the homer bucket comes with a lid I could maybe attach the lid to the bucket and create a seal... possibly bypass the need of the additional jug... if not I might just shop around for nipples seeing as how I have PVC pipe laying around.

It's a 5 gallon bottle.
The bucket is just to keep it from tipping over

This is the type of bottle:

Cool. On the feeder, I have heard that rectangular holes in the bucket work best. Good luck!

So I was planning on buying the silicone to make a seal between the bucket and the lid but I posted a wanted ad yesterday on freecycle (LOVE LOVE LOVE that site!) I posted that it could have a crack and all no biggie so I got a response and an address I'm going to pick up my water jug today after work for FREE!!!! So for a water and feed dispenser that will last my girls a LONG time without needing to be refilled.... 17 bucks plus tax!!!! I'll be video taping the process of making these things for those of us (like myself) that are visual learners! YAY!!!! Small project for the weekend! (now if I can talk my DH into fixing the roof of the pen well have some REAL fun!)

You all inspired me. I made some over the weekend. Here's a description of my version. I took 5 gallon water jugs, the kind from the water cooler that have narrow necks. These were free. Only one had a lid. When I went to Home Depot I saw that they had a lot of jugs and asked if I could take some of the lids. 2 lids - free. I looked at planter drip trays at home depot...they were $6 each and had bumps in the middle...less stable. Next stop was Harbor Freight. They had great plastic oil pans that were a perfect fit for $3 each. I sat the 5 gallon jug in the oil pan and drew a line around it with a marker to show the top of the oil pan relative to the jug. I drilled a hole in the jug an inch or so below that line. Then sat the jug back in the oil pan, filled it with water (with my finger over the newly drilled hole) and put the cap on. Ta da! one amazing waterer. I put bricks around it for the chicks to stand on if needed, but they are getting bigger so they can get to the water anyway. 2 of the 3 waterers leaked over time, so I taped the lids on with electrical tape. They are working great now. Of course, I will be on the look out for better lids. Anyway, I am thrilled. Someone from work gave me their "last year patio umbrellas" so I have those laying around with the waterers under them. The oil pan sides are high enough that the chickens don't poop in them.

Thank you for the tips! We LOVE the new waterers.
