You said that the temperature in your area can drop below freezing in the winter, so if you get a Speckled Sussex, be aware that they have large comb/wattles, despite being considered cold hardy.

I'll keep it in mind and have my eye out for frostbite!

I voted for Gold Lace Wyandotte and Barred Rocks because they are Hardy, and very good egg layers. Good in cold weather active but not hyper. If you want a good backyard bird that actually produces eggs these two are good. Meyer Hatchery sells in small groups like My Pet Chicken and are less expensive. I do believe My Pet Chicken sells Meyer stock. I have a slanted view because I live near Meyers and can drive and pick them up.

Thank you everyone for your help voting! Here are my final results:
Round One of Chicks (predetermined but whatever)
-Silver Laced Cochin
-Bantam Barred Rock
-BBS Silkie
-Splash Marans
-Easter Egger
Round 2 of chicks (coming 1 year later)
-Silkie (white or black)
-Speckled Sussex
-White Leghorn
-Mystery chick! I'm going to have a smaller vote for that chick here, with a more specific range of options.
