I too am worried about vultures trying to get my chickens. I live in an area where there is a large number of the black vultures. There are also many cattle farmers all around. They have told me during calving season they have to watch out for vultures because when a calf is born the vultures smell the afterbirth and will peck the calf's eyes out to kill it. I know they are scavengers but why would they kill one animal and not another to get their food.
I came out of my house one morning and there were about 50 in my trees!! I thought I was in an Alfred Hitchcock movie. If you ask me there are way to many of them in my area, and I really wish they would go away because they always seem to be up to no good.
here is a link about black vultures (not turkey buzzards): http://lib.colostate.edu/research/agnic/vultures-livestock.html
