I just received a copy of the zoning here in Earl Township, Berks Co, PA. It states:

Subject to the regulations and dimensional standards set forth below, agricultural, horticultural, and nursery uses, except intensive agriculture, should be allowed in the WAC district. Lawfully existing agricultural, horticultural, and nursery uses in the districts are considered non-conforming uses and are subject to the applicable portions of this Ordinance that govern such uses. The presence of one animal unit shall be allowed in WAC, provided that the lot contains at least two acres.

After some searching on the internet, I found an old court case from the township with the meaning of WAC in it. It means Woodland-Agricultural-Conservation Zoning District. Also, an animal unit is either of the following: one dairy cattle, one beef cattle, one horse, one swine, two sheep, two goats, five animals kept for the production of fur, or ten fowl.

I don't believe I am in that WAC district. I am zoned residential with 1.24 acres. Wouldn't I have been told that when I bought the house?

I don't want ten fowl, I want four chickens. Does that make any difference?

Everyone I have talked to, told me that I shouldn't have even asked about getting chickens. I should have just got them. Now I am a little confused by this zoning stuff and I would appreciate any help you guys can give me.

Thanks!
