My laying hens, 4 silkies, 1 SLW like to lay in the same nest. This morning, one of my silkies had been in the nest pushing an egg out, and another hen came over and started growling at her. Next thing I know she's easing into the nest and lays an egg on top of her, then walks out

She must have been getting inpatient! They were litterally lined up waiting to lay an egg..except for Ms. Pushy..lol

Poor girl. But still funny. Humor me for a minute:

Impatient: You'd better hurry up, or I'm gonna drop this thing on you!

Silkie: You wouldn't dare.

Impatient: Oh yeah?

*PLOP*

Silkie: D:

That's just too funny! My cat likes to sleep in chicken nests... and the gals fuss like crazy at him to move the heck out of the way! But you know cats - everything in their own time and the world revolves around them!! The gals have 12 nests to lay their eggs in, but they prefer only a select few and that darned cat always picks the preferred nest-of-the-day!

I have 9 girls that are laying at this time(two on timeout(moulting)) for the most part they all try to lay in 2 out of the 4 nest that are in the coop. They are starting to use the other two and I still have one that lays it right inside of the door to the right so that I don't step on it when I go in. Of course I just got two of the nest in there this last weekend.

I wish our ladies were that civil , yesterday i watched as our alpha hen miss red stormed over to the preferred nesting box(one out of 7) and pulled the wyandotte out of it ,by the wing , sending feathers into the air! The poor SLW paced frantically making the strangest non stop clucking nioses i have ever heard... stubborn , she would NOT lay that egg anywhere else... of course miss red took her sweet ### time in that one particular nesting box. as soon as she was done the SLW Jumped in and plopped it right out. Looks like i will be giving in to there simple ways ( 6 wooden built nesting boxes with hinged tops that noone likes to use vs one old wooden produce crate with hay in it that has a line of hens waiting to get into in the morning.
i guess its like giving a kid a large expensive toy and watching him have a blast with the cardboard box it came in
