We will be getting our first chicks on April 22 and we are super excited. I ordered 4 chicks and no rooster. I was concerned about the neighbors and the noise but I might eventually get one.
My husband and I were looking at coop plans and ideas and came across BYC. I love so many of the designs. I've bought some magazines and read lots of info online trying to get myself prepared.
Growing up we had chickens for a time but they just wandered around and were not friendly in the least. My grandmother had them everywhere and of course the poo was everywhere. I am hoping for a more pleasant experience raising them from chicks and building them a nice coop. I will let them out some to forage but not much because of our cats and the foxes and hawks that live in our woods.
I bought the ones the man at the Farmers' Feed store recommended for layers. It was golden something I think but will verify when I go back to get them. I am intrigued by the different breeds but I definitely need to start small.
I have two boys, one is about to graduate from high school, YIKES! and the other is almost 13. My younger son is very excited about our new family members.
