yeah its alot of work but so worth it in the end. I'm hoping for a good spring that isnt a total wash out so I can get the crops in and then I will also be selling eggs locally this year too. I have 6 laying hens now, but will be adding more here in the next few months. Have to wait and see what all 16 of my wonderful chicks turn out to be.... I know 3 of my Barred rocks ended up roos.... so i have 3 rock hens, but its still to early to tell what my 4 ameraucanas are or what the 6 salmon faverolle are as well. they are all just a week or so old.

Mornin'.

You should be able to sex the Favs by color. If they have dark wings coming in they are boys.
Oh really! now does the whole wing turn dark or just the tips? I read that around 5 weeks I'd be able to tell really easy but can it be done sooner?

Morning, all...My dog was so patient with the lazy day yesterday (rain ALL day) that we started today with a little hike to a waterfall.

Hope everyone has a fantastic Monday. Homemade syrup, csling? Too nifty!
Ahh, a nice hike would be great! I hope the rain stays aways for a few days so Specky, Brooklyn and I can go for walks around the property!
Yep, homemade syrup! there is nothing better. Its sweet, sticky but free from anything artifical or added. just the sap from a maple tree boiled down to a certain degrees and canned! its like magic, in its own silly way.lol

Portia and I love our hikes; there are 35 waterfalls in my county and some wonderful hikes associated with all of them. When I started my house hunt from a distance, I was enchanted that my town backs right up to a ton of state and nationally preserved lands...no overdevelopment danger here :)
Between getting the garden prepared and put in and the baby chicken novelty, poor Portia has been deprived of her typical hikes. Fortunately, she's very laid back, as long as she's included in whatever I am doing.

Lol, reading about the maple syrup process reminded me of reading a book about it when I was in second grade. Hmmm, perhaps some french toast for breakfast...

WOW! Your area sounds amazing!! I have many hills and valleys I can see from my front poarch... But anything in hiking distance is farm land everywhere! Not that its a bad thing, but I would be even better if it was something like what you have! Yeah I remember reading about it as a kid too, but never in my life ever thought it would become a natural, yearly thing lol! Shoot in High school I actually had to teach the gal that won the miss maple sweetheart crown about the whole process because she didnt know a lick! (I won Miss flamming Foliage, but now days we both say we should have just switched crowns and titles... would have made more since do to the process and requirements for each crown)

Don't get me wrong, I still pop the pup into my car and drive to trail heads! There are a few that are only about five miles away, but not a great hike to get there...it's the fun of being off-leash in the woods that Portia and I crave :)
Okay, don't suppose you could dig up a pic of you as Flaming Foliage Queen??? I'm visualizing a circlet of fall leaves on your head...
