Wall mounted feeder, made it myself

Quote:
this feeder is only 5" deep at the top and will be wall mounted inside the hen house so I don't think my girls will use it as a perch since they free range during the day. the only difficult part in making this feeder was the angle cut for the side pieces which my husband cut for me. the materials cost about $15

Again this is a great feeder... I have been thinking if they begin to try get on top you could add a removable slanted board to the top that you would just pull off before you add feed and then return it when your done feeding.

Also you could add a thin board to the front to restrict the amount of food that comes out at a time

I made two very, very similar ones and have not had great results as the feed either spills out or the chickens throw it allllllll over the floor (and WON'T eat it off the floor!!) First one was flat on the bottom which didn't automatically "feed" the food toward the front, so then we recut at an angle and of course then the feed practically poured out. We have tried putting chicken wire across the front (didn't help) anther wooden lip which then prevented the birds getting the food once it got down to a certain level... one headache after another. I LOVE the idea of storing the food in the feeder but so far, we use it to store the food but have gone back to the hanging metal feeders. We have blocked up the front to keep the food in. deeeep sigh. I sure hope you have better luck - I'd love to figure out how to improve ours!

I like it a lot!!! I wanna make one also for my 2nd coop!! I like it better than the pvc feeder I have inside my coop currently. Did you put an angled piece inside to push the feed forward or no? I made a treadle feeder also for the run area and like it also, but it's too big for inside the coop. So thanks for the idea!

I don't see why you would have any problems with feed pouring out, I don't have any problem with feed coming out of the treadle and it's a similar design just bigger and with a lid.

I have been looking for an inexpensive hopper style feeder but couldn't find one that didn't cost an arm and leg so I built one. It's 17 1/2" wide by 24" long, not sure how much feed it will hold since I just finished it. Now we'll see how well it works!

One design that I saw like this has a slanted roof to keep chickens from roosting on top. Perhaps that's a modification? How's it working? I am thinking of doing this for my new coop.
