Walmart Hatching Eggs?? UPDATE..p6

Quote:
Check for the bullseye first. Organic and free range have absolutely nothing to do with fertile! Lots of farms around here have free range hens but no rooster. They just don't think a rooster is worth the cost of feed when they get nothing out of him! Unless they sell them as fertile....some people believe they are more nutritionally complete

One theory as to why some of the eggs from the big chains might be fertile is that some operations keep a separate flock of chickens to hatch their replacement layers. If they don't need all their hatching eggs, they would sell the fertile eggs from the breeding flock. Obviously most of the eggs would not be fertile, but it makes sense that the fertile ones would be packaged together. If this theory is true, I would expect any pullets that hatched from these eggs to be excellent laying stock.

In the off season, hatcheries don't hatch many chicks. We quit buying them. It would not surprise me that the hatcheries sell the eggs they get in the off season to help pay for the food their flock is eating. These would be hatchery quality.

Just a couple of thoughts to keep the story going.

UPDATE I candled today... still not seeing anything but I started late at night on the 16th so I will keep my fingers crossed and try again in 2 days.
My duck eggs are not showing anything yet either so maybe I just can't see whats there with the light I use. Normally I don't look until around day 7.

Well I had to toss them, but bought a new fresher batch. We ate some-and again saw bullseyes (not in all though) so I decided to try again and put 6 in the bator and see what happens.

Oh also I was right and found Walmart does carry "South West Farmers Market" eggs here in California. These are not on the recall list for the recent outbreak of Salmonella. We ate them and no problems.

sorry if you already touched upon this in your post, i didnt read everything, but have you ever seen rock island fertile brown eggs? they are a farm here in CA and i know lots of stores sell them including safeway, and i have heard of them being sold all over the country. anyways i incubated some and 9 of 11 hatched!

they are white leghornXRIR
