Want Chickens

I'm 12 yrs old and I want chickens and have been wanting them for a long time.My mom says that it would be a waste of money because you can't make a profit from selling eggs, we have a 5 acre yard so plenty of space and she thinks they stink and make noise. Need help convincing.

Any ideas. Thanks!

Would your mom let you have just a couple hens? If you take really good care of them and keep their area clean, she may change her mind. After tasting a fresh egg or two, she my be a full fledged chicken lover.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Your mom is probably right and you can't make a profit selling eggs, but if you get some really high yield layers such as Sex Links (sold under such labels as Isa Browns or Shavers in New Zealand) or Leghorns, you can break even (or at least close to it). If your family eats eggs, your mom is having to buy them which means she will spend considerably less money on eggs if you have your own high yield layers. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your mom to agree to some chickens.

I'm not sure where you're from but Sex links are also sold under these labels in Australia. I believe they're also sold under the label Warrens there. In the USA, they are sold under labels like Golden Comet, Golden Buff, Cinnamon Queen, Gold Sex Link, Red Star, Gold Star, etc. There is also a very productive Black Sex Link variety which is sometimes sold under the labels Black Star, Bovans Nera, or Rock Red.
