I am new to chicken raising. I ended up with one Rhode Island red and just built my very first coop. It can hold about 10 so I am looking for a good place to buy a few more.
I like the Rhode Island reds and have looked at a few other breeds on the web but want to get some that will all get along and produce good eggs.
Hello and welcome to our amazing flock! Have you checked out the breed section yet? It has a ton of chickens and their descriptions to help you make a good decision. Here is the link to that, https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/chicken-breeds. I personally have a variety of chickens that lay brown, white, cream, green and blue!
Lots of nice chicken breeds out there that are great layers and docile and friendly as well. Basskids left you with our BYC breeds page, but you can also check out these 2 breeds pages for lots of quick fun info on the different breeds....
When you do find some new birds, make sure to introduce them slowly for a few weeks from behind a cage or fenced off area. You can't just throw them in together with out a blood bath. Keep the new ones separated but within the flock for about 3 weeks. This will be enough time for everybody to see, no touching, and work a lot of the pecking order out. Come mixing day, it should go fairly smoothly. Keep an eye on everybody for that day and that week and always intervene if it turns bloody.
Great to have you aboard and welcome to our flock!
