WANT TO DUST FOR MITES...QUESTION

When "dusting" your chickens (regardless of whether you're using DE or Sevin), what is the process you use?

Do you wait until they're asleep, grab them, and shake dust on them? My chickens don't really like me holding them. I'm just wondering what the best way is.

What I'm doing for now is mixing DE in the dirt where they take dust baths. I would think if the concentration is high enough, it should work. Make sense?

you may know it's safe , but I know I wouldn't put it on the garden never mind my chickens. I didn't even think anybody used that crap anymore. Wow if I used that I'd just give up and eat the crap eggs from the grocery store and give up the garden.

Chickaroo! :

I just ordered some from freshwaterorganics, because it seems like a good price/deal for a 50 lb. bag. What does everyone use to spread it?

Oh yeah, and how exactly do you dust your chickens with it?

Chickaroo, you might want to use caution with DE. Too much exposure can wreak havoc on lungs of any animal, including humans, so don't spread it in such a way that you or the chickens will be breathing it in right away. I'll probably use it for some purposes, but I think it'd be best to dampen it a bit right away.

Okay. LOL

OK, y'all. I know opinions run strong. I think we can learn from each other.

I'll re-state my question: How do YOU "dust" your chickens, regradless of what you use?

Makes sense to me. That's what I'd do.
Mites leave the body of the host on a regular basis and go into the nesting/bedding material to carry out their other functions, so I'd put some DE or Sevin (preferably Sevin) on/in the nests and bedding too.

BULL! The company itself has not tested it on chickens; therefore, it cannot recommend it. That's the only reason.
SOME people might throw their eggs out... That's not even worth discussing.
I don't care if you don't like it or if you "think its about as unorganic as you can get...", but save your blownup comments for someone else, i.e., don't demand that I do anything to suit you.

Thought it was obvious my comment wasnt aimed at you. DEMAND? You gotta be s****** me! I WAS saving it for someone else-it was directed at people that may have been uninformed and take for gospel what they might read here. Talk about opinionated! The recommendation "to wash hands after using" is just because cleanliness is next to godliness. I dont much care what you do with your chickens. Other people might like to know what they are putting on theirs.

I think I did read on BYC somewhere that it wasn't good to breath all that in but probably would have forgotten about that. Thanks for reminding me Joe.
