I'll cast another vote for Barred Rocks just because they're my personal favorite. Meyer hatchery sells an all pullet rainbow pack, you get an assortment of different breeds. The drawback is the hatchery chooses the breeds for you. You may have to order a few BR chicks seperately if you don't get any

It's fun to get chicks of several breeds, and see what appeals to you. Henderson's Chicken Chart, feathersite, the Cackle and MurrayMcMurray catalogs, all have good photos and information. I would add Speckled Sussex, the friendliest ever hens, and Chanteclers, to your list. Mary

LEGHORNS. They are a light breed, lay loads of eggs and amazing feed conversion rates.

And I forgot Salmon Favorelles, sweet and gentle souls, and beautiful. Not a good choice with bossy types like the production reds and sex links. Mary

Ask a dozen people, get at least 2 dozen answers. I love how everyone has a favorite breed or two. Keeping chickens never gets old with so many options available.
