My wife and I bought 25 Red stars from McMurray Hatchery last year and are very happy with them. We would like to start incubating our own chicks and hopefully get somewhere around the amount of brown eggs we currently get but realize that as soon as we throw a new roo in the mix they are no longer red stars.

Sooo... we are looking for a roo for our hens that would make brown egg layers... I think RIRs are a parent of the red stars so maybe that's what we need. We are north of Syracuse, NY BTW.

I might be wrong here, but I'm fairly certain it's the hen who determines what color egg she will lay.

Yes but I'd like the best genetic chance that the resulting hens will be brown egg layers.... take a brown egg layer.. breed with a brown egg layer.. just add water....

am I off here?

I have a few different Orpington roos that you could choose from. I have a 20 week old buff, a black that has a little red coming through on the hackles & two blues with some red on them... these are 13 weeks old. I also have two splash orps & one blue that are about 8 week old.

I live east of Syracuse. I can send pics if you want.

How much are you asking for a roo? Pictures would be cool.

Here are some pics... they were taken 4 weeks ago, so the boys are much bigger now. I'll try to get some more pics in the morning. I'll try to get the splash & black to stay still for the camera too! I'd be fine with 5 bucks each.

The buff roo doesn't like the camera as much as the lavender, so he's in the background:

This one has much more red to him now:

The other blue/red/buff... also much brighter colored now:

I have a French Black Copper Marans Very large bird that was about to go to the processors. If you are willing to give it a good home he is yours he carries a very Dark egg gene, has been Vaccinated for Mareks and was from Lee and Ginny excellent breeders. Being in NY I could ship him overnight for $18 that would include the box and all. I would love to get him a nice home he is a sweetie

Or maybe I could meet you part way to deliver him
