Hi! I'm currently in a bind and was hoping somebody may be able to help me out. My husband has been unemployed for nearly 7 months now and we're really struggling to make ends meet. Quail & quail eggs seem to be an affordable source of protein and I can raise them legally with only a ten dollar license. The eggs are reasonably priced, I've got a local source for high quality feed and am hoping to raise BSF to convert otherwise unusable human food leftovers into additional protein for the birds. My brother and sister in law have an incubator that they're going to loan us, though I don't know which one offhand... beggars and choosers, after all.
My only area of concern is housing. I will need a large rabbit hutch type cage for the extra males to grow to processing size in, a medium sized pen or cage for a brooder and hutches or cages for the layers to keep in the yard. They don't need to be new, but they need to be in decent shape so I don't have to spend a lot of time and money on repairing them. I've been watching Craigslist and Freecycle without any luck. I'd been hoping to be able to get things rolling soon so that once the weather is warm enough, I'm able to have laying birds and eliminate eggs from the grocery expenses.
Does anybody within an hour or so of Kingston have or know where to get any hutches or cages that they're willing to donate to a family trying to make ends meet? I'd be eternally grateful!!!
Thank you so very much,
Sandra Mort
