Ok, I'm pretty sure I have a rooster Silkie. Its a little bigger than the other silkies, its wing growth is faster and it doesnt appear to have a slight poof on its head like the other three. SO I was wondering, how loud are silkie roosters? I cant keep a roo unless it is quiet... so.... is there anyone who can ease my worries? Thanks

I HEARD that silkie roosters are quieter than other roosters... keyword *HEARD so I'm not positive

Ok! Thanks, I really hope its not (but im pretty sure it is) and if it is I hope it is quiet! I dont want to get rid of it!

I will post pics ASAP (my camera is kinda broken right now but I'm getting a new one!)

They crow just as much as any other chicken actually. I had one that crowed at night, at lunch, and in the morning!!!! It even crowed in my lap.

My silkie roo starts crowing about 4 am and crows off and on ALL day long and yes, his crow is as loud as my brown leghorn's was. Maybe mine is the exception?!?!

Post a pic so we can verify it's a boy.

Mine seem to crow more if there is someone they are competing with.

Loudness wise, I don't think they are quite as loud as some of the other breeds.

MIne only crow at night if I have a heat lamp/light on.

The poof is sometimes telling. On a girl it's a rounder shape. On a young roo, it can look more wedged in the front.

I don't live in the city but I do live in a neighborhood and believe it or not my neighbors didn't even know I had any chickens or roosters, until my DH told them. I get nervous when I have a roo that seems to crow too loud and have gotten rid of several, but my Silkie roo does not sound as loud as the other roos I have had in the past and only crows a few times.

My silkie roo's crow is like an air horn....loud and shrill. Then again I have a silkie roo that's not as shrill. Personally I think a bantam's crow is much louder than a standard. Just depends as each rooster is different.

You will notice a mohawk type top doo if it's a male. Also the tail is more pointed, female is more rounded. You may also see the comb developing a bit larger than the female.

Determining a silkie's gender can be tricky. I had two that were identical but couldn't determine the sex until one crowed.
