WANTED: Silkie People (have a question)

I have four Silkie roos, and they actually vary in volume. One of them is louder than my standard Ameraucana roo, but none of them crow all day long. It's mostly in the morning and when they hear me come home.

Thanks guys. I'm starting to get concerned... I'm pretty sure I only have one roo among the 4 but now ya'll have me thinking about the whole hair-doo thing! Ok, I'm going to get more silkies tomorrow and I DO NOT want a rooster, what is it I should, or shouldn't look for? The ones I have that I htink are girls have a slight poof on their head, their wing growth is slower and they seem smaller than the one I believe is a roo. I did the wing-sexing thing (which apparently doesnt work on silkies) So I just want to be sure Im getting hens tomorrow. I know it is hard to tell but does anyone have any little tricks. Some of you have mentioned some but I get confused because of the wording or the fact that what you describe as a roo looks like (what I think) are my hens.... So what do I look for again? Thanks I could really use the help!

Now, here is the one I think is a roo, compair the head and nostrils. also, its hard to tell that the boy doesnt really have a poof on his head because it creases... but here we go...

Is it possible that the babies that you received could be mixed with another breed? Maybe that "Roo" is indeed a mixed breed and that's why 'he' doesn't fit the Silkie standards...so to speak. Regardless of what "he" is, the little one is precious! Have fun with your new chicks.

I am far from an expert on chickens, especially at sexing them, but this is what I have been told by many BYCers over the last year when trying to determine the sex of my (Silkie and non-Silkie) chicks. Generally speaking, males will feather out more slowly than females. Females will often have longer wing feathers than males early on. Silkies are extemely hard to sex and you often will not know what you have until they either crow or lay an egg. Anyway . . . Good Luck!

The large one that you think is a roo is a strange looking Silkie; I think he's "part" Silkie.
I GUESS at the sex at that early age by the width of the comb; you do have one that has a wider comb that I would guess is going to be a roo---but its not that large chick.

Which one do you think it is BC? I guess it makes sense that the white one is only part silkie, he has 5 toes. No idea what he could have been crossed with. We don't knwowenough about chickens to even hazarsd a guess. : ( Where exactly is the comb? I thought it was onthe head, but I assumed the chick wasn't old enough yet to see it. I have been realizing that his head is shaped differently than the others.
