Hi; I have a flock of 12 gorgeous buff orpington pullets, right around 12 weeks old. I raised them from birth, and now they are beginning to cluck. They are housed in a well-insulated large coop with a large totally fenced yard because we have predators that would get them if they were free-ranged. In addition to being my future egg-layers, these girls are my pets, who climb on me if I go sit on a stump in their yard. I'm beginning to be able to tell them apart by their personalities. I want to add a cockerel to my flock - not to raise baby chickens, not even to have fertilized eggs although I'm not averse to that at all. But my husband and I live on a small farm here in southern Missouri and miss the sound of a rooster crowing in the mornings. Because this is what we are wanting, the breed of cockerel is not important other than wanting a largish one who will be compatible with my girls and not get himself pecked to death. We would like a colorful one so he stands out from the girls, but want to avoid the super-aggressive breeds. (Brown leghorn, barred Plymouth Rock, Dominique, Black Sex Link, Black Australorp?)We're thinking that a single roo with the girls, with no male competition, will help keep one mild-tempered. If you have a cockerel for sale that would fit in with our plan and are in South-central Missouri, anywhere from West Plains to Springfield (east to west) or Lebanon to Caulfield (north to south), I would gladly come to pick him up. Just let me know!
