you can forgo the 7/8" holes in the wood by screwing the pvc directly into the side of the wood with the screws. use at least two screws.
i use this design with 20' sticks for walk in hoop houses covered with plastic sheeting or shade cloth.

Okay I've started it! I'm trying to stick to the plans mostly, but in order to save money I had to change dimensions to 7x6 since I had free wood but not enough 8' pieces.
