Only from a distance ... or in a picture!
They're awesome in person (walruses, I mean). Sea world (FL) had one on loan, swimming around in their cold water tank. That boy was huge. Bigger than a full grown bull bison. Just massive. You felt a little nervous being so close as he swam by, even with the thick tank glass between. Incredible.

Do you remember where you were when it started happening?
I didn't have TV so I didn't know until later when I logged on to the internet to send an article for our (very small town) paper and started to see odd things—weird e-mail headings that made no sense.

I used to joke that if America were to be attacked and go to war, I might not know for weeks. It didn't take that long, but still... I put my daughter in the truck and we drove to the cabin where my folks were staying the summer. They had TV but no phone. They didn't know either. It was so surreal, watching the footage play over and over. None of us could believe it.

The natural way of population control in the wild is very cruel.
Hunting is kind, compared to what would happen without it. I've never been unlucky enough to shoot an animal that didn't drop instantly, but I'm not very daring with my shots. I don't want to see them run or struggle, but of course it happens sometimes. Even then, compare that to dying slowly, uncomforted, of disease or hunger due to overpopulation... not nice.
