I was thinking about getting a couple of ducks but had a couple of questions first. Can you put them in with chickens and do they eat the same things? I have never had ducks so any suggestions as to what breed to get for a newbie that want a pet and some eggs?
I've had mine for 2 months now. I know for sure for sure that you can not feed them medicated feed like you can with chickens they eat more and can overdose! you can feed them unmediated chick starter though. they need more niacin than chickens so adding brewers yeast or niacin drops in water is needed some say only for about 10 weeks some say for their lives it's up.to you but you will.notice your duck needs niacin if it seems to not walk very much niacin deficiency causes lameness and other problems as well. reading anything and everything you can on raising ducklings will help so much there are so many things you wouldn't think about. like as ducklings swim time needs to.be short and supervised as they do not have preen oil at that young of an age and can easily drown or become chilled if I think of more tips or find pages that helped me I will let you know. oh and I.have seen a lot of things were people have the ducks and chickens stay together ducks are really.messy though and there will have to be certain accommodations for them I also saw a tip on having the chicken water up higher on a ledge so chickens can get to it but ducks can't so.they won't.muck it up. as for breeds I have a pekin who is so sweet and puffy and said.to.be great egg layers. I also.have an indian runner she is a sweet heart too she actually comes when called most of.the time but doesn't seem to liked being petted as much as my girly pekin does I.still have to.chase both down and hold.them while.I pet them haha but they realize it.feels good to.be loved hope this.helps you
