I don't know where you live, but there is a breed that is called the Altex that is gaining popularity in some Southern states. It was designed for heat tolerance, and was developed from Flemish Giant, Californian, and Champagne d'Argent rabbits. It was intended as a terminal cross (breed an Altex buck to NZ or NZ cross does, all offspring get sold for slaughter) and only for commercial purposes, but they are out there.

Not to throw cold water on the enthusiasm (it IS exciting), but the most important thing to do from the beginning is get quality stock. That free rabbit and cheap doe may end up being more trouble than they're worth. Start with quality stock, and expect to pay $65-$100 for each. It's worth it. There are plenty of stories out there of rabbitries who started with free/cheap stock and ended up having to start from scratch just a few months down the road. You're inheriting whatever problems each of those rabbits possesses, and breeding them, you'll compound them.

As to the hutch, you want to avoid wood. Rabbit urine will break down wood in a hurry, and it's impossible to keep clean.

Well I don't care about ''good'' stock really cause like I said there gonna be pets and sell weaned kits everynow again, and you can't eat a pedigree and it don't matter about the bloodlines or anyhting all I want is a plain ol rabbit haha well I like I'm gettin a pure bred and I've wanting newzealand whites for a long time so as long as I get them I'm fine with it thanks though

I'm not sure why you're here, in all honesty, since you have this all figured out. When you get advice you don't like, you immediately dismiss it. What you are saying you're going to do, in all honesty, is unethical. To sell low-quality animals with god-only-knows what defects is something any reputable rabbit breeder would never condone. You keep getting sound advice from people with full-scale rabbitries and years of experience.

Taking any rabbit for free or for a couple bucks on Craigslist is not "getting a purebred" at all. Quite the opposite. And yes, you do process and eat pedigreed rabbits. You also can get non-pedigreed rabbits but from reputable breeders who can still tell you the bloodlines, which absolutely do matter. But you'll figure that out when you start breeding, and you have small litters, birth defects, or poor-quality rabbits. Of course, whatever is said here seems to be irrelevant to you and your plans. I wish you the best of luck.

I don't turn down advice or anything I made this thread for rabbit care not pedigrees and so on. I was juts wandering if anyone had any tips or anything for a beginner at raising ''pet'' rabbits that we might eat and sell weaned kits everynow again for pets,meat,4-h or whatever. So please don't judge me and say things I didn't when all I was wandering is if there were any tips or anything a rabbit owner or rabbitry would like to tell me. I'm starting a homestead and I live in the country so I wanted to try rabbits out,I just got back from TSC and bought 2 feeders, 2 waters, 2 packs of salt and mineral wheels, bag of alfalfa hay chews,a 50 lb bag of rabbit food, and tomorrow were gettin the hutch are friends said it's big, heavy, and real well made so I'm sure were gettin a real nice home ade hutch and not to sound rude or mean in this paragraph but I'm just wanting to raise rabbits and obviously there gonna be spoiled new zealand whites and well taken care of...but like I said before if there's any tips on caring for rabbits or anything let me know I appreciate it thanks

And I still gotta buy them some toys but still there gonna have great lifes, and the new zealand white buck had a bad past and his hair was almost all brown, his toe nails were so long they curled back to his paws, and his cage was infested with cockroaches so he's definitely gonna love his life
