For cold hardy, good layers I recommend RIRs', Welsummers (very pretty bird/egg) or Dominiques. Yes...I'm partial to my girls

Of course, you can mix your selection and still keep silkies. I got my birds from mypetchicken.com and have been very happy with them. You can check the web site to see if they will ship to Nova Scotia. Good luck with your chicken adventure, Sue

Glad to have you join us! Buff Orpingtons are great layers, they are cold hardy, and they are very sweet. I have five of them and I absolutely love them. Rhode Island Red's, and Barred Rocks are some other friendly layers that are cold hardy.

I have never owned Silkies, so I'm not sure about their tempature hardiness. I know from what others have said that they are very very sweet, but they aren't the greatest layers.
