I believe it boils down to "pole cats gotta eat." By keeping your delicious birds away from their hungry mouths and eager claws, you are cruelly denying them sustenance. Perhaps even causing injury when one can't overcome the temptation of those lovely feathery morsels. Just think! A broken claw, a lost tooth...why they might even get stuck breaking in and asphyxiate. Clearly the least cruel thing to do would be to have your birds roost outside where they can be safely reached.
