Warning about low carb dieting... Atkins, South Beach, etc.

I seriously want to talk with a nutritionist about what the heck I should and shouldn't eat. My stones are calcium oxalate and the list of foods that are low in oxalate, and are approved for me to eat, are some of the very ones that are bad for diabetics. While I'm not diabetic, yet, both my parents are, their mothers were, I have aunts, uncles and cousins on both sides that are, AND, I've had three 9+ lb babies, which can be an indication of future diabetes. While Atkins and South Beach can be great choices for diabetics, they can be horrible for those of us prone to developing kidney stones or with other kidney problems.

Finding the right foods for me is starting to become a real pain.

Hi, I have tried to stay out of this topic but please read Dr. Atkins book. There is a lot of untruths being posted about his diet plan.

One thing that is true is that she had surgery twice now and her doctor blames it on that program. Who am I to agrue with someone with an MD?

I am not arguing with any one. I just wanted to point out not all things posted about the diet are true.

Man 100 stones. I had a friend pass one stone and he described it in excruciating detail. I can't imagine how painful; that would be. Of course since I'm a man I can't imagine the op had passing a stone.

Dr. Atkins was never charged with that and this is the first time I've heard anyone say that. In fact, his wife continued his work, creating recipes, etc. So, let's not libel his name here without any proof. Sounds like one of those outrageous things that Snopes debunks.

Thanks, Debi. I'm doing ok... having to take Percocet every 4 hours for the pain from the kidney stent, but that will come out on Wednesday, so should be all better then.

Wishing you a speedy recovery, Robin. I used to do Atkins and Stillman when I was a teenager and in my 20's. Now, since my thyroid has gone wacko and I have to take meds for that, those really don't work for me any longer, plus, I really gag on that much meat, eggs, etc. I'd rather have fruit and salads and cereals with occasional chicken.

Well, while this post isn't entirely related, I would like to offer some opinion and some fact. My wife has had chronich renal stones for the last 4 years. We have spent many nights in the Emergency Room and she has undergone at least 4 lithotripsies.(hope that is spelled close)Anyway she never changed her diet habits and has never done a low carb diet. The way people react to certain things tend to change throughout thier lifetimes. She is only 32 but she has had a complete histerectome. Less than a year later her stones came. I would just like to point out the the chemical changes in her body, alongside her normal diet are most likely her cause for renal stones. When asking a urologist about what causes stones, I was told they really don't know for certain what causes them, just that they can guess and hopefully make them stop. No such luck so far for her. I hope you have better luck. Another thing I have seen suggested from more than one urologist is to make a homemade lemonade. Supposedly the acid from the lemons helps in the noncreation of these stones.
