WARNING!!! Electric fence DEATH!

Quote:
Good lord, if it is a cattle-sized charger AND weedburner AND nonpulsing, not only is it likely to be lethal to *chickens* that touch it, I would be awfully worried about dogs or people that encountered it. It isn't "19" volts, that is not a plausible number, it is either "1900" (which *could* kill a chicken if it were nonpulsing, but probably would not) or "19,000" v (aka "19kV) which is likely to be lethal to PEOPLE as well, not to mention dogs etc.

If it is a many-acres size charger being hooked only to a small pen, you either need to install a device to greatly step down the voltage, or use a different charger. As you can see, what you have now is *dangerous*.

Please, y'all, be careful and use some basic common sense when setting up electric fences. DO NOT use nonpulsing chargers unless nothing else will possibly do the job -- and the only instance I can think of for that is confining certain extremely escape-oriented dogs -- and CHECK the voltage with a RELIABLE DIGITAL fence meter, it needs to read somewhere between 3000v and 5000v (that's between 3kV and 5kV) or it is pointlessly weak or dangerously overcharged.

Well it does hurt like Heck!!! It got me 3 times! As for killing other animals.... I don't care! Its not for them! Its to protect my babies!!! plus It is NOT the voltage that is dangerous! Its the amps that will kill you! I have had 240 Volts at 24 amps ran through my arm by a welder! it was dead for 2 days then hurt like all get out! and I have been hit with a 300,000 volt stun baton thats 300kV And my dad has been struck by lightning! It is NOT the voltage!!! Amperage is the Killer! But I will leave that alone for now! That is not what this is about. If it kills something that is touching the wire GOOD! It should not be touching it any way! It does hurt I can testify to that. I warn every one that comes even a lil close to the pen. I repeatedly tell them! As for me. I was feeding them noodles through the wire. I just mis judged distance LOL It will deffinately let you know its there!!! Then when I discovered the lil baby laying there I didn't think! I just reached down to grab her off the wire! I even saw a lil blue arc when i lifted her.... Thats when It got me again! I wasn't thinking! It is just such a terrible waste and accident! They are all doing so good and looking GREAT! I am so excited about my new adventure. I will just have to take a lil more time and make sure to cover all areas so they can not even get their heads through the fence. Just please ALL be aware and BE CAREFUL wit electric fencing!

God Bless!

Well evidently you DO, since you are distraught that it killed one of your chickens, which are a kind of animal

If you have a dog or cat, it's a concern too.

plus It is NOT the voltage that is dangerous! Its the amps that will kill you!

Yes yes yes, obviously I know, but the point is that IN AN ELECTRIC FENCE SETUP, you will be getting a dangerous amount of current if the fence is running at 19,000 volts and/or is nonpulsing at 1900v. The concern is not just yourself, it is anyone ELSE who might be on your property someday, too, e.g. relatives or visitors. If somebody trips or slips and falls against the fence, they can get killed. It *happens*, with the kind of setup you are describing.

It is just such a terrible waste and accident!

I'm sorry, but it is not an 'accident', it is a predictable result of a dangerously set up fence. I did not say it that way in my earlier post, because I figured you maybe honestly did not *realize* it was dangerous, but since you are now DEFENDING your setup and apparently saying it is perfectly fine, I am going to put it bluntly like that.

If you set up a fence in a dangerous way, you can't be surprised when bad things happen, and you're lucky it was 'just' a chicken to give you the wake-up call.

Condolences though,

Pat
