I went outside today to check on the 4 silkie chicks under my silkie, and could only find 3. After looking I finally found the chick-it was tangled in mom's feathers and stuck. Thank goodness it was alive and went directly to the food. Never expected anything like that to happen.

I've never heard of such a thing.. I've seen them sit up inside the wings before, but never get tangled....

Ohhh, I glad it's ok!

That chick is going to be my problem child. The coop is up off the ground with a ramp. Today one of the moms decides to go out for a dust bath. The chick follows her out. The chick can't get back in the coop so mom is out there with her but I'm sure they're cold. Poor chick. I moved the brood to a dog house with a very secure pen. They are all back together and happy.

Cynthia, thanks for sharing. What an odd thing to happen!

I lost one 3 years ago that got tangled in it's momma's feathers.

"Pigie", the momma, is a bantam cochin and my absolute BEST broody. She has raised 4 clutches. Her first was the spring of 2007. She hatched 4 chicks. 3 pullets and a cockerel. At about 2 weeks old I saw Pigie in a panic. The little boy was dangling behind her. He had gotten tangle by the neck in her fluffy under feathers. He was already gone. Took her a good hour to calm down. She raised Sky, Little Lady Blue, and Suzy for several weeks. All are still here with my pet bantam cochins.

That was the one and only time I ever saw it happen.

Matt
