warning of sorts

Lavender... supposedly dried lavender wards off scorpions... put it on the windowsill, etc and they just don't like it so they steer clear... rather like basil and/or citrus is supposed to be disliked by mosquitos... don't have a clue if it works, but if they're a problem in your area it might be worth a try.

You could try putting a raw potato cut in half on it I know it draws the sting out of cuts and such. I am so glad we don't have them in NH!

There are different species of scorpions; some are mild, others can be deadly. In the US, the smaller the scorpion, the more deadly. The worst in the US is the Arizona bark scorpion; however, it generally does not call for emergency care except for the very young or the very old. Scorpion venom is a neurotoxin. The specific species will determine how the sting site reacts, but many do not cause swelling (although it FEELS like it is massively swollen). The pain can be excrutiating and lasts several days. As with all stings, there is a risk of anaphylaxis. And yes, they can and will sting multiple times.

The "one" time I was stung, it got me on both arms, two or three stings on one, one on the other. It was on the refrigerator, and when I opened the door it threw it onto me, my jumping threw it to the other arm. And this was all in the dark--I now turn on lots of lights if I am walking through the house at night.

They can really hurt.

I have found the potato is good to relieve the sting and also great for burns! Another thing is to make a paste with meat tenderizer and a little water. Put it on the sting or bite and it will ease the pain.

I just got popped by Yellow Jackets 2 days ago. Not as bad as a scorpion, but bad enough for me.

I feel your pain.

You aren't too far from me, either. I'm by Cedar Creek Lake.

Sounds like a scorpion.... we have lots of them here..... or at least we did until we got the chickens!! I have seen our's eat them without hesitation. The ones out here hurt much more than a bee sting!!!! (speaking from experience) Try wetting a rag with some vinegar and holding it on the sting. It sure helped ALL the times I have been stung.

That's the ONLY thing that's gotten me, other than ants and skeeters, in my life. It was HORRIBLE. Climbing a tree and was stung on the knuckle... maybe 10-12 years old... my hand swelled to like twice the thickness of my mom's... fingers looked like sausages... and it hurt like hades squared.

I think mom put baking soda and water paste on for a while... but maybe it was baking soda and vinegar... I really don't remember but I've since heard of both being good for bees... the other one, one I found when planning for camping/field trips was toothpaste... think that had something to do with tingling taking your mind (literally distracting your brain) off the pain.

Don't know if that translates to scorpion though... and it's been hours... so prolly ice for swelling, Benedryl, and prevention of infection is all you can do now?

If you do try the lavender make sure you let us know if it works.

We get all kinds of scorpions here, from the itty bitty 1/4" neon green ones up to the big 3" cream colored ones. One of the little green ones got me about 6 times real fast when I was splitting wood a few years ago. It felt like a cigarette being put out on me for about 3 days! It hurt SO bad!
My Chihuahua found one of the great big ones under my kitchen table last summer and got her nose stung a couple times before I figured out what was happening and killed it. She was pitiful the rest of the day! But her pain tolerance is extremely low.
