This is a 13 week old Black Copper Marans pullet. About a week or so ago I started noticing a bump forming on the top edge of of her beak between her nostrils. It is hard (like a wart, not like her beak) and doesn't seem painful. She is in a pen with other chickens but none of them have this problem. I have seen where a few other people in the past have posted this same question with very similar photos but so far I have found no clear answers as to what it is.

So I'm hoping someone can pipe in with some insight, if nothing else can anyone tell me how their chicken is doing long term with the wart? Does anyone know if it is hereditary? Contagious?

Does anyone know of any good poultry medical resources I could look for to hopefully learn more about this issue?

It might be an abscess and would need to be lanced.
It could also be where she somehow inhaled a granule of feed through her nostril or up through the roof of her mouth and it got caught up in there somehow and she couldnt sneeze it out. I've had this happen before but the granule was closer to my hens right nostril...the looks are very similar and it was hard as a rock too. I cut it open with a razor blade and pulled the hard and bloody small granule of layer feed out with tweezers. I wiped the cut with betadine and put a little neosporin on it and returned her back with the others.
Good luck.

Thank you for the replies. I was thinking it was some sort of abscess as well and yesterday I decided to see if I could gently prick it open. I used a needle and carefully pricked the surface just to see what her reaction would be (she was being so tolerant of me) and I was surprised that the prick bled just a tiny bit. So I stopped.

Could it just be the skin surface bleeding and I just need to go for it and try deeper to reach the possible abscess? Or is the bleeding a bad sign? I'm starting to think that the couple tiny dark spots (miniature scabs) I see on it is possibly where she's bumped it and made it bleed before.

Also unfortunately the only vet in town that will see chickens is out of town until May 11. I've made an appointment with her for the 12th if I don't figure something out sooner. She is still eating & drinking & acting fine (she is too young to lay yet).

What I find interesting is that I have google'd the heck out of beak growths and the like and a lot of people seem to have posed this same question with similar photos but no set answers have surfaced.

Hi,
I was wondering if you were able to find out from the vet. what this thing was and if yes, how was it treated?
My Asil chicken devolopped exactly the same thing.
Thanks

This is so weird. I also have a Black Copper Maran 8 weeks old with the same exact thing going on. She doesn't act sick, drinks, eats perfectly, and is even a bigger than the rest of my pullets. I have been researching everything about beaks growths and haven't found a single thing close to what mine has. Your the only other person that I've came across. How is yours doing now, and did you ever figure out what it was? Please let me know I'm am very curious.

This looks skittle like the "cyst/boil" like thing on my black copper Marans rooster! Haven't tried to lance it but think I will! I couldn't find anything on line that was similar.

My EE has developed one of these after scratching her face on a chick feeder a few months back. It was almost healed when she scratch it open again :/ I am trialling putting some super glue on the open (and cleaned) wound. Hopefully this will help it to heal faster by keeping the dirt etc out. I wish I could put a bandaid on it!!!

(Edited spelling mistake)
