Warty Egg on Day Three

Well, at least my dog will be happy! He's had his eye on the incubator for a while now, looks like he can have scrambled eggs for breakfast! And how kind of USPS to do all the scrambling for me!

well, i've got one egg in the 'bator right now that has the 'mobile' air cell, but knock on wood, it's developing. granted i'm turning it the minimum i can, and only a couple times a day at that... didn't turn at all the first 2... (oh and incubating upright in an egg crate, so just propping one end of the crate up each time.)

granted it's only on day 3 but i saw a definite heartbeat tonight. tho i'm wondering how well it'll develop, the yolk is right up next to the air cell, and the heartbeat looked to be just under the shell. wish i had a better camera, i would have gotten a pic. it's my marans eggs i'm most concerned about. of the 7 shipped, 2 were smashed to bits, 2 have mobile air cells, the other 3 were mostly ok tho the air cells looked like they'd peeled off the shell a bit but not floating all over. the EE's were almost all like that, and 2 candled alive tonight (only candled 3, and the 3rd i just couldn't tell yet.) and the 2 dorkings (shipped) and 2 bantams (not shipped, my own) also showed signs of life. 8)

so for a first experience with shipped eggs, so far so good.

the only downside, i'm incubating a total of 51 eggs (the 9 worst are in the hatcher turning manually) but the turner holds 42...

so i'm sure by day 7 i'll be able to tell which ones to toss and have room for all the good eggs at once.

Is it a mobile air cell, or a ruptured? Im referring to ruptured... A BUNCH of tiny bubbles.

yeah that's what i mean too... teeny bubbles that move all around the egg as you turn it... the bubbles have merged somewhat into a single bubble, with a few teeny ones on the edge still, but it's developing. surprised the heck out of me, but figured i'd give it a chance and see. today's day 4, i'll candle when i get home. i had 2 eggs each of the marans ee and dorkings all with ruptured air cells... last night one ee was developing and couldn't tell yet on the dorkings or marans.

the other damaged air cells are more like where the membrane's peeled off the shell but the air is still captive, and doesn't leave the air cell entirely when you roll the egg.

i have had muscovy eggs (shipped to me) that had loose and VERY bubbly air cells develop ducklings AND hatch ... so bubbly and loose air cells are not a concern for me
I just made sure that the eggs were incubated with the pointy end down and I used care when candling them

Opened up the most suspicious looking egg this afternoon and it was most definitely scrambled, no development, no nothing, just looked like it was ready for the frying pan. The egg shell was super brittle, the most brittle egg I have ever cracked, and extremely porous, so it wasn't anything I would want to pass on to future generations anyhow. At least now I know what to look for.

I didn't, but I should have!

When I candled my shipped eggs upon receiving them, I noticed that my batch had three categories

1. Eggs with lots of little bubbles.
2. Eggs with one big bubble that wobbled around really easily.
3. Eggs with one big bubble that kind of wobble, but seem pretty attached.

I numbered all of my eggs and kept a corresponding log to go with them. I'm interested to see what the other 'free floating' eggs do. I sure hope I have yinepu's luck with these guys.

Good luck on your hatch(es)!

Me too! I'm anxious for day 7 to roll around because I promised myself not to candle them again until then. Easier said than done! My eggs looked a lot like what you mentioned. The scrambled one I cracked open today was very bubbly when I initially candled it.
Hopefully we can bring the other little guys around.
