Was I being unreasonable?

He sounds creepy...like a nut, or a fanatic, or major manipulator or a major control freak...or all of those, lol. You never know who you're dealing with off CL. Don't be surprised if you get a "different" interested buyer from another email address but with the same attitude. CL and similar sites make it easy for creepy people to make contact with a lot of people that they'd never get the opportunity to otherwise.

I agree. I don't think he's being unreasonable wanting to make certain that his food is really coming from the type of place he wants to be buying from, but I also don't think you are unreasonable for not wanting him to come to your house. I try not to eat meat unless I have seen where and how it is grown. However, if a seller didn't want me to come see their place, I would simply keep shopping (I understand why people wouldn't want to invite a total stranger to their home). He can do the same!

I recently found out that a farm in my county that sells meat and eggs that are advertised as organic and pasture-raised is actually doing just what that guy suggested. They are purchasing eggs and meat from commercial growers or big box stores and then repackaging them to sell at inflated prices. That has made me a little more wary of who I buy from and why I would really like to see the farm where my food is grown.

If he is so picky about where his food comes from, what in the world is he doing on craigslist, lol. I agree 100% with everyone else. Don't 2nd guess yourself, its always best to go with your instincts!

The buyer could very easily put an ad on Craig's List stating that he wants eggs, from a farm where he can see the hens, coop, run, feed, etc. (Someone would probably respond.)

What he didn't have to do was be a jerk and essentially accuse the OP of being a fraud.

IMO, someone who attacks like this is doing it to try to get you to back down. To me, he sounds dangerously like he has an agenda that has nothing to do with eggs. He could have just emailed you back and said 'I like to see where my food comes from, but thanks!' It would be done with. Instead, you are second guessing yourself. Someone who is more meek may have backed down to appease this guy. Then they would be putting themselves in danger. You could always post in the ad that you don't have people out on your property, but that you are happy to email pictures.

I don't think he was being unreasonable , wanting to know where his food is coming from, honestly I think most of us are raising chickens and eggs for the same purpose, That being said, If the man gave you an uncomfortable eerie feeling, It is your right to not give any personal information about where you live, or about anything else in your life, that includes not selling eggs to him, and he has the right to not buy from someone that he doesn't seem comfortable with buying from. He said No thanks and hung up, so done with that customer, on to the next. So it all worked out for the best right?
I personally sell my extra eggs to people who I work with or personal friends, or the friends of friends that are willing to except a personal reference from them. I do not let strangers come on my property and go through my coop either. So really my only option is to sell to people who know me or know of me through other people that I know.
I wouldn't worry about what that man thought of you, He doesn't know you.

And it will work out in the end, it always does. Just do what feels right for you.

You can post eggs on CL? Here, Madison WI area, the add gets flagged in just a couple of minutes. Once the add was flagged in 23 seconds. So what's your secret? Thankfully we are on a major highway and can just post a sign, but when we lived in town it would have been nice.

Is quite possibly a "competitor" flagging your ads.

Some people make a "hobby" of flagging ads. Just contact Craig's Admin to advise and try again.

Food sales violate CL's terms of use. I've seen some creative ads left alone.

In our area, there hasn't been a problem with eggs listed in the farm and garden section. I've seen lots of ads for eggs. Lots of them.
