Was I too rough on my little rooster?

I read the "GURU" of rooster behavior and He or She say to '"PICK HIM UP" and hold him for as long as it takes and do this consistantly when your roo is aggressive. Secondly and as a "LAST RESORT" hold him up sidedown....They also say that this a very "DANGEROUS" way to handle a Rooster and you could Kill him be collapsing his lungs. I rest my case and would NEVER recommend the last resort method.

It's wierd how everyone but one person thinks that it's ok to hold a rooster upside down.

Chances are your rooster is immature. Once they are fully matured, they are no threat to youngsters. Quite thhe contrary, as a matter of fact, they are very protective. You put that cockeral in his place and did not hurt him. That`s what you should do. When he gets a little older, he will be a gentler fellow. Till that time, you have to give them room to escape.....Pop

Okay I feel really bad now. I will not do that again. It was so hard for me to do, but I thought he was going to draw blood from my chicks. But I now know better. I feel ashamed of my actions, but I thought I was doing what was right. I will have to give him some extra grapes tomorrow, and will simply isolate him when he does something like that again. I feel ill now. I guess after all my hard work I am not a good chicken mom after all.

Just relax. You didn't do any major harm, so don't be so hard on yourself. Real parents of real children feel this way ALL THE TIME (second-guessing ourselves)! You just gotta do the best you can...live...and learn.

please dont feel sick if you did not feel right doing it just dont do it again, we all have our opinions and techniques he still loves you either way and nothing you did caused him any harm. You are a very good chicken mom just for caring about whether is was right or wrong (which by the way it is neither just one of a few ways)

I've seen lots of people hang chickens upside down by their legs to move them from one pen to another. I've never seen any die by this method. I punish my silkie rooster by rocking him like a baby. He always gets far away from me after that.

Sorry that you have got everybody giving you different advice or comments. That's what this is all about. Sharing.

You are NOT a bad chicken mama !!! You are learning like the rest of us. I'am sorry for sounding so harsh about what you did. I just cannot see a need to harm any animal whatsoever.

There's always other alternatives you can try. I stand by my advice to you.

Thanks, Third year Vet Student.
