Was I wrong about the sex of my muskovy?

It makes sort of a squeaking sound if I pick it up

hmm... so no definite honk/quacks? My little girl makes a bike horn sound and was doing so a couple weeks before here brothers started with a more definite huff/hiss. It's quite hard online to be accurate, i have no doubt irl i could nail it, i have 17 Muscovy right now, quite a number being drakes.. the sizing is incredibly evident from a young age.

This is a pic of my last hatch(from mid jUne) you can easily spot the only duck of the 9 total. They were less than 2mths old in this pic... about 6-7wks

Nope mine just squeaks. Although I haven't picked her/him up in a couple of weeks so it could be different. I guess i should listen a little more carefully today and see if I hear anything different.

Although she/he will likely hate it, i'd go grab it... by now you should get clear sounds, they all squeak/chirp as young .. that is not say ducks don't hiss, get around them when their broody

BUT the boys cannot honk/quack. You try to grab my almost 4mth old duck and she goes off like an air horn.

I will definitely do that a little later and let you know! =)

It could certainly be possible to end this mystery however basing on your other thread and comparing your 2.5yo duck to the one in question, i am almost thinking you will get nothing but hissing(drake) because it is quite a big larger in comparison which is the key factor in drake vs duck with this breed.

Hi,

I am asking a similar question about my Muscovy duck here:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...s-5-6-and-now-week-7-included/20#post_9712593

I am posting week by week photos so others can compare...while I am no expert on sexing, I've picked up some tips from threads on this site along the way, I did notice something last week when I took my duckling back to the farm to compare her to her 23 brothers and sisters.
The biggest difference I noticed was the size of their ankles. The slightly larger ducklings, not larger by much mind you, has HUGE wide ankles when looking from the side...and not a sniff of any wing feathers.
Their ankles were at least 5mm+ larger than my ducklings. Your duck is 12+ week old and these little 7 week old "male" Muscovies had ankles and legs at least double the size of your ducks ankles and legs. Your duck has positively skinny legs compared to these ypung 7 week olds.

I know they're not from the same genetic breeding group at the Muscovies I looked at, but if I had to make a calculated guess I would say your duck was female...but I've never raised a Muscovy from duckling to adult before, so don't quote me on that.

cheers,

Woka
