Was my chicken going to die

I know this is pretty pointless but am really upset right now and just needed to ask though probably know the answer already.

Our fave chicken was attacked by mine and a neighbors dogs earlier and cut open her stomach and under her wing. It was all a horrible blur and I was so close by that I stopped it as soon as it started. I grabbed her safely and she looked fine but then I saw the blood and her inners.

The girls are in a pen and large fenced area that is 100% safe but think she just started to fly over as only yesterday we found her in the garden and blocked up what we thought was a hole but guess not! My dog actually saw her yesterday and alerted us, kept her company until we put her away so I am shocked that this happened as I thought my dog knew her place but guess it was a pack thing. I kept thinking that maybe I could stitch her up or get her to a vets but thats 5 miles away and she seemed in a bad way. I did the humane thing, which was so horrible and I just hope I did it right and am now pretty sad as she was more than just a chicken (you know the one with so much character and friendly), so sorry for posting this and I am sure even if she could have been stitched, which to me looked impossible, she would probably have died by infection or fright later.

I am just second guessing myself now and doing the blame thing. Her friend is looking all over the pen for her now and won't come anywhere near me!!!

You did right. Feel no guilt, no second guessing. You did a difficult thing and showed immense courage.

When a puncture wound occurs on a chicken from a predator attack, it's going to involve a lot of bacteria and infection is practically guaranteed. When the wound is so acute that the "inners" are exposed, there is no other recourse but the one you took. I'm sorry and I so do understand your emotional pain losing a special chicken.

Awhile back I left the back gate opened and the neighbor's stupid black dog came in and killed one of my hen. I didn't think he would dare do that as he's a whimpy albeit huge dog that my little puny dog always drives away whenever he came near our property. Anyway, dogs are strange in that their personality could switch suddenly due to their ingrained genetic pre-disposition thing..... like say, if you had a terrier or hunting dog gene in them.
