Was told these are probably Black Jersey Giants, but not sure.

Hi! I’m new to the chicken game. These two babies are new to the family and the lady at the feed store said they come as an assortment so they aren’t sure the breed but that the employees think they are Black Jersey Giants. Any advice? Thanks!

So they could be jerseys but they could also be:
(Most likely)
Australorps
Barred rocks
Dominiques
Black sexlink
Easter eggers/ olive eggers
(Probably not)
Marans
Favucana
Wyandottes
(Almost definitely not but who knows)
Langshans
Swedish flower hens
Dorkings
BLACK CHICKS + NO POSITIVE BREED ID = BUSHELS OF FUN

Awesome! I guess I’ll see how this goes 😂 when they get older is it easier to identify the breed?

BJG and Australorp have: slate colored legs, and a straight comb. A BJG has yellow on bottom of the feet, while an Australorp has pinky-flesh colored bottoms of the feet.

so, what type of comb? That will help a lot.

Dorkings have 5 toes, and yours does not.

Marans often, but not always, have feathered legs. Look closely to see if they do, but it doesn’t appear they have feathers.

Thank you so much! They have fleshy pink colored under feet.

Langshans are supposed to have feathers on their legs.
And as Acre4Me said, Dorkings are supposed to have 5 toes.
I suppose that's why you put those two in "Almost definitely not," because the chicks in question appear to have clean legs and 4 toes.

And I think Sumatra should be in the "probably not" section--they certainly do exist and are black, but are fairly rare.

Goodness I can’t really tell. What do you think from this angle?

so, looks to NOT be a straightcomb. Sometimes hard to photograph in the first week or so. An Australorp has a straight comb. The comb of your chick looks more flat - reminds me of a Rose comb beginning, maybe a cushion comb. Can you tell if any tiny serrations like a single comb would have?

here is a 1 week old chick with a single comb:

Comb:
You're right they are hard to see, but I'm sure those are not single combs.
Probably rose, possibly walnut/cushion, don't really look like pea comb. I keep thinking I'm seeing a buttercup comb, but I think thats just the shadows messing me up--I have never heard of a black chick with a buttercup comb.

Dominques have rose combs, and I think that is the most likely breed. Dominiques grow barred feathers (black and white stripes), so you will see that soon if they are Dominiques.

Wyandottes have rose combs, but black ones are fairly rare. Barred ones and blue ones are pretty rare too. I think Wyandotte is the second most likely breed.

Sumatras have pea combs, but I think the combs look more like rose than like pea, so probably not.

Easter Eggers, Olive Eggers, Favaucana often have pea combs, sometimes have single combs. I don't really think those chicks have pea combs, and certainly not single combs. So probably not any of those breeds.

I think all the other breeds that have been mentioned in this thread have single combs, and I'm sure those combs are not single combs.

So I think you've probably got Dominiques, with a chance of Wyandottes.
