Washed Sand with peafowl?

Thanks for the info. I will try practicing that. The cost that he quoted is the cost for pick up. Pick up is cheaper than delivery. I will be picking up the sand. I think that I read that the sand can be 2 - 3 inches deep. Does anyone know exactly?

So if I wanted 2 inches deep sand to cover 10 ft x 20 ft of area, how much would I need?

I used the calculator and it said that I needed 2.22222 tons of materials for 10ft x 20 ft x 2 inches (Deep). HUH?

What is a ton? Another measurement?

After going to the calculator link website, I had to go and take 2 ibuprofen. I was so frustrated. Directions and measurements are off limits for me. I just can't handle it.

Yes , Kuntrygirl, That is the same as what I thought about the web site, The sand can not get too deep depending on the reason your useing it.. The sand drains better than dirt and rock, it also gives them grit.. grit not calcium.. It will keep the birds somewhat cleaner than the mud that dirt and rain make. In some areas the soil is sandy and drains good after a long rain so the mud is not a problem, when I lived in Okla we had good drainage but here in Mo. it stays muddy a long time.. The wife and I have packed over 40 ton of rock and crushed limestone in 5 gal buckets into my pens ( 100 ft. X 30 ft. ) and still I have a mud problem in the run areas.. I would reccomend you put it as thick as you can and keep adding to it because it will just go away. The birds will dust in it ,the wind will take some of it , it will leak out the sides, some will go down into the earth, some washes away in the rains. Good drainage is a good thing also, so when you build new pens whatch for how the water drains from you area. George

Thank you for this information. So how thick do you think I should make it. Would 4 inches be too thick? I am new to this, so whatever you all suggest I do, I will do it. I'm not good at directions and measurements but I'm great at taking advice.

Thanks for all the information EVERYBODY !!!

So in my pens i have 3-4 inches on sand down on the ground, it may be a little more but its a rough estimate. The easiest way to order sand would be by 1/2 truck or a full truck load. I would go with a 1/2 a truck load for your pen. My birds absolutley love the sand and they bath in it all day. Don't get to close cause having sand in ur eye doesn't feel so nice. Let me know when you want to get more peafowl kuntrygirl. After all, you can't just have 2 lol

If you have an out of the way place to store the sand get extra. We are lucky as there is a sand pit right down the road so we get it by the dump truck load and go thru about 2 a year. Each load is supposed to be 16 tons but since they are close they load the truck down pretty heavy. I have no idea where all the sand goes, you would think the pens would be 5 feet deep in sand after a few years but they aren't. I guess it sinks in?
