washing baby chickens

my chickens are house chickens - they all stay in the house (in my room no less). everyday they get to romp and play outside, but when its time to come in, they get leg washes. they're all cochins, so the sand and grasses do a great deal of dirtying up those leg feathers. also, with all that fluff on their butts, the poo likes to stick to it, so that gets a wash too often times. blow dryers will become your new best friend...and theirs! they love the warm air.

when our oldest cochin was little, she and her brother got baths on a weekly basis. we always used tear-free shampoo, but it dried out their skin ( we always wondered why there were white flakes all over their newspaper everyday. the skin around the base of their feathers were drying out and coming off during preening. now the bathing is limited, as low as 4x a year. they always smell so fresh and clean afterwards though, and you don't wanna do anything else but snuggle with them )
