Group Photo with the main Cockerel, a Blue Splash

This shot has black Javas in it...the black pullets.
This was taken when the cockerel was much younger.
he is MUCH bigger now and stunning.
He (all the JGs) have a wonderful, happy easy going disposition too.

In spring, I will seperate the 2 breeds, but right now they are happy together for winter.
Those are some beautiful birds! I guess it's a good thing I have my heart set on breeding Favs in the spring. JG are also a bird I was looking at.

Quote: That is to funny, that not only I didn't notice that but just the thought of if it did affect them! Good catch though Cowgirlgrace.
Quote: Well I found them at a hatchery and they are almost $10. each, I would love to order like 3 pullets and a cockrele. So from what I am getting is that I can breed a splash to a splash and will get blue, black and splashes? Gosh I hope I got that right, if so I will be hopping back on that site and ordering some chicks!

Nope. You would get 100% Splash. If you throw a Blue in there you would get 50% Blue and 50% Splash. If you got a blue boy and a blue girl, and maybe a couple of splashes you could get Blue, Black and a lot of Splash. Blue X Blue gives you all three colors, 50% blue, 25% Black, 25% Splash.

I am breeding BBS Silkies. So I will have end up having two Black boys, a blue, a black, and a splash hen. Hoping to pick up some more girls. Or Hatch some more. :)

ETA- Write this down, I had to because I can't ever remember it.

Blue x Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black
Blue x Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black, 25% Splash
Blue x Splash = 50% Blue, 50% Splash
Black x Splash = 100% Blue
Black x Black = 100% Black
Splash x Splash = 100% Splash

I would imagine watermelon would make a huge mess in the brooder. They are very good at messes!! I've got some organic romaine and apples right now. I'll try something this afternoon.

Oh yeah, I think I saw that suggestion recently. Our neighbor's big leaf maple drops almost all its leaves into our yard. I usually collect a bunch to feed my bugs, but there are TONS left. I'll throw some in the pen for them to play in when they move outside. Thanks!

Also interesting, is if you have a Black Copper Marans and put him over Splash Blue Copper hens, you will get BBS and I am hoping for a Nice Blue Copper boy (along with more BBS hens.

Should be infested by mid December....

The big incubator is going.............................and y'all know how chicken math is.

**** Situation is, I have MANY Splash Blue Copper hens, but no Blue Copper Cockerel....so, I can breed a Black Copper to these blue splash hens & get myself a few nice cockerels...

I like how you say "Later peeps", then 2 1/2 minutes later you post again. You Washingtonians are funny.

I have a question for those of you with covered runs. So far, I've never cleaned poop out of the run. It doesn't seem to need it, I just add some straw when it gets to looking dirty. I've been thinking of doing a full cleanout though, because whatever rodent is still living under my coop has been pulling all the straw under the coop as bedding and protection; I can no longer see under the coop it's packed so tight with straw. Been thinking about using all those fall leaves in there instead. So should I just rake out all the old straw and stick it in the composter? Will it start to break down on its' own? It's obviously full of poop, and I'll keep adding the poop I scoop off the shelf each day as well. I guess I'm just wondering how often y'all maintain your covered chicken runs (not the coop, our coop is very clean). In the summer it was totally covered in flies but I think that's just the nature of having animals?? Now that it's winter the flies are gone and the smell is gone too. Will it all just break down over winter or should I compost it and start fresh every once in a while?

Quote: I wish my Favs were to the point of my being able to hatch! We will see if I can wait til spring. Although I guess it would be helpful if all of them were laying and my younger cockerel was mature and mating. Will have one pair and one trio to work with as soon as it happens. :)
I was also hoping for a Blue Silkie boy, but I do have a blue hen and will have two black boys, so I can breed for at least one good one, I hope!

It's because we have lots of stuff to do around the yard, so when we sit here and read posts, we feel guilty for not getting the yard mowed, coop cleaned, etc. Then we get up with good intentions, look out the window, see that it is still pouring and the yard it too swampy to walk accross for the next 9 months and remember why we sat down in front of the computer in the first place.

One more question: has anyone just had a pullet lay great for 2 months and then up and quit for the winter? Princess, my EE/Marans mix from WA4HPoultryMom did that. She hasn't laid an egg in weeks! Everyone else is laying fine. I'm a bit peeved.

We need the eggs badly and if she's not gonna pull her weight all winter I don't know what I'll do.
