Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

So sorry about your rooster!
Home from the Vet. Arnold had a ginormous tumor on his kidney. Dr Bruce suggested a bunch of things that could cause it. I asked about testing for Marek's and he did not think it was necessary and isn/'t rushing over to put down my whole flock. (He does do that sometimes). He had also lost a lot of weight which I didn't notice until yesterday.

He suggested that I get future stock from a different breeder preferably one that vaccinates. Arnold was vaccinated for Marek's. And keep doing what I am doing. I just checked the rest of the gang and their weight seems healthy.

I feel a little better knowing that he was probably predisposed and it wasn't bad food or water or something stuck in his crop.

Thanks for all your support. I had a good cry this morning and feel a little better.

Not sure if I will get it back in time to get many more chicks done for Monroe but at least I will be back up and running before long.

Jeanine is pretty great!

Haven't had much to say lately but I appreciate everyone helping me figure out what to do with my soiled scratch and BOSS. I'm going to bring the container in re house and leave the lid off and stir it daily to get rid of the moisture. If it begins to mold I will freeze it.

I've been working on a purple tunic dress for DD as well, busy hands can't type much!

Hi Jess, love those colors, and your stitches look so even! Wish I could do that.

Be careful with your damp grains and don't wait until you see mold. By the time you can see it, it's put spores and "roots" far beyond where you can see. I know your freezers are pretty full already, but try to dry as much as you can right away, in the oven like CR suggested, and freeze the rest. It can go from ok to bad very quickly.

Quote: Dr. Bruce is great isn't he? The Mareck's vaccine that most of us get online is only good for preventing the tumors. But it isn't 100%. Was he one that we vaccinated last summer? He also assured me that Mareck's is everywhere and there is only on type of vaccine that keeps them from getting it at all, and it's complicated and expensive if you could get it. I still think vaccinating to help prevent the symptoms is something I am going to do.

Before I went to sleep, I wanted to comment that my kids and I looked up the pictures of Yoda in NYC. Fun photos. My oldest son cracked me up - he said Yoda looks like he was picking his nose at Rockefeller Center. LOL. Thanks for taking Yoda further than we've ever been and sharing his trip with us.

I'm turning in. Long day. We had our Cub Scout Blue and Gold banquet this evening. My oldest son received his Arrow of Light, the highest award in Cub Scouting, and he bridged over to a large local Boy Scout troop. It was a lot of fun tonight, but a lot of work to pull the banquet off. Good night all.

That is going to be adorable! I only know the basic stich and cast-off, my mom can do all sorts of pearling and neat stuff! Can't wait to see it when it's finished!

Hey- went to check on the humidity in my inCOOLbator this morning, which is supposed to be completely locked down, but noticed the thermometer was sitting right on 2 eggs, and needed to be shifted. I quickly re-arranged it and shut the lid again. Then I noticed one of my blue eggs was rocking- as if to say "I'm here!" . I tapped on the plexiglass window and it rocked again. It knows morse code! ha! Raising SMART chicks here :)
